The deceased has been suffering from spina! trouble for about two monthe and despite the best medical attendance and most tender nurs- ing death claimed him for his own. Austin was & young man of a most generous and gentlemanly type and his death at the early age of twenty-six, just in the prime of budding manhood, hss cast a shadow of sadness around his native home.’ A clever student and a euccessful teacher his future seemed full of promise. But the dread summons come, and his young spirite fortified by last rites of his church, went hopefully forth to meet the reward of long and patient suffering. By his death the community has lost a big-heart- e d and generous friend. His funeral took place on Sunday, the 4th, at 2 o’clock, pe m., there being upwards of one hundred carriages in the procession. The services at St. Joachim’s were performed by Dr. Deyle. To his bereaved parents, brothers and sister we tender our sincere sympatby. R.I1.P. — ——_ —.—_—__ FSTEEMED EXCHANGES. Mail and Empire: Sir Wilfrid Laurier’s announcement that we can do without more railways into the Yukon until the boundary question is settled isa new juatification of those who opposed last year's Yukon deal, It stands to reason that if we do not need the railways now we did not need them a year ago. Certainly it was foliy in 1898 to offer 3,750,000 arres of our best gold land for roads that would build up United States coast towns, if it ie wrong in 1899 to permit such roads to be built at no cost to our country. The opposition to the Yukon transact on was justified, and while praising Sir Wilfrid for acknowledging it, the country ought also to be grateful to those who helped tc thwart that uawise proposi- tion. The best way to avoid sickness is to keep yourself healthy by taking Hood’: Sarsaparilla, the great blood purifier. _-—-> — —The Mail and Empire remarks that * Upon the Yukon deal of the Jast seasion of Parliament the decision of the Govern- ment to charter no more railways into the gold region until the boundary question is settled is an extraordinary commentary from an unexpected source. The contract which the Miniatere pushed with un- paralelled zeal in 1898 provided for the con= struction of two roads. One commenced in undisputed Canadian territory, but was to be reached only threugh the Stickeen river and by way of Wrangel, which is a United States port. The other was to Start from some point cn the Lynn canal —in all probability Pyramid harbor. There can be no question that the Stickee 1 line, if at all serviceable, would have built up Wrangel, for everything would bave been transhipped there to river boats. On the other band the Lynn canal line would have created a town or territory iv dsspute, whereas Sir Wilfrid Laurier now saysa new town-—seeing that we are not certaim that it may not turn out to be American—ought not to be encouraged, — eee | NEWS NOTES.
