EARLY CHICKS NOW PAYING PRODUCERS h Poultry raisers were urged early this year by Poultry Services, Do- minion Department cf Agriculture to buy or hatch chicks a month in two months earlier than usually so as to make eggs available in the fall and winter for export to Great Britain. They are now benefiting by the pay-off. ‘Pwo cars of new crop eggs were offered to the Spec- ial Products Board on August 22. for shipment to Great Britain a- gainst the British egg contract. This was a full month earlier than in 1046, and the 1047 early hatch- ed pullets should enable producers to continue egg deliveries through- out the fall and winter, when Bril- aln wants them most and pays s premium for them. say officials of the Department. JAMAICA ENCOURAGE! PINEAPPLE INDUSTRY IGNGGTON, Jamaica. Sept. 11.. (OP) - The Jamaica Agricultural Society. on the recommendation oi T-fon. This ventilation will allow the surfaces of the tubers to dry, keep the humidity down. and thus greatly lessen the losses from late blight tuber rot in cases where tubers have been inoculated with blight spores during digging op- eratlons. "Potatoes should not be har- vested before the tops are com- pletely dead. If the tops are green, or even partially greemand infected with late blight. the tubers are inoculated with blight spores as they come in contact with the tops during digging. The spores are carried on the surface of the tubers into the storage and very soon the tubers exhibit the bronze discoloration characteristic of late blight rot. Other rot-pro- ducing organisms gain entrance into the tubers through the blight rot lesions and hasten the rotting process. “A dry. well-ventilated storage. as advised above. will cause many of the blight spores to dry out vand die before they have germin- ated and invaded the tubers. Many spores which may be on the tubers will be destroyed by the drying effect of sun and wind if the tubers are permitted to lie for s while in the field before be- ing picked up. "Tilee digger should be kept well ahead of the pickers. This practice will also result in the establishment of s lower initial humidity in the storage because the potatoes will be dried o: be- fore entering the building.
