UNIVERSTEY OF PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND: CH 102.3FM/700AM CABLE CAMPUS presents — Station News Things have been crazy at the station over the past week. Af- ter being turned off for the sum- mer months, our FM CABLE ser- vice was restored by Island Ca- blevision. Our signal is sounding good both day and night. Last year we were plagued by our sig- nal strength being drowned out in the evening by church broad- casts from England and news from Bangkok. short - wave radio is amazing! Lenard Drake, a local radio engi- neer stopped by to help us out. The power of Marion and Bernardine residents will be pleased to know that by the time they read this the sig- nal in their residences will be new and improved. ‘That annoying hum should be corrected. Blan- chard residents will have to be a little more patient. The line to the big res was cut during the summer and should be restored soon... Thanks to all DJ’s new and old for their contributions to the station. We still have a few shifts left open so stop by the third floor of the barn and sign It’s more fun than rolling up. naked in jello! . Programming and information you The CIMN Shelli Wheaton, a DJ with the CIMN Radio had a chance to speak to Don Schmid, drum- mer with the successful Canadian band, ”The Northern Pikes”. The following is an exerpt from that recent interview: CIMN: Can you tell me about the name ”Northern Pikes”? How did you come up with such an origional name? : Schmid: The band started in January of 1984. What we wanted was a Canadian identity. We thought that ”Nothern” sig- nified that quite well. ” Pikes” we laughed at. I’ve caught them be- fore, I mean we’ve fished occa- sionly, but not a lot. A week or two later, when it’came time to ’really’ need a name because we had our first gig coming up, it had stuck with us - ”The North- ern Pikes”. If nothing else, we re- membered it, and just went wit it. I think it worked out well. ~ CIMN: When you’re releas- ing singles from the album, who choses which single is going to be released? How much input does the band have? CABLE UNIVERSITY OF PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND 102.3FM/700AM CAMPUS. Interview Schmid: A lot is left up to Vir- gin Records, but it is very much a thing that’s talked about be- tween ourselves, our management and the record company. A lot of times the majority ot the deci- sion will be left up to the record company because that’s their end of the business. Fortunately, we haven’t run into a situation where they wanted to release something that we totally felt was wrong. ”Hopes Go Astray” could have been on the first album, but we thought “let’s just give it eight or ten months on the road and see what happens to it”. We have maybe twenty five songs to choose from for the third album and we’re going to hopefully pick the best ten or twelve that will work together. King Swamp - King Swamp Most of you have probably never heard of King Swamp. Most of you will probably never ‘hear of them. That’s too bad, be- cause this group is hot. Ex Shiek- back axman, Dominic Miller, and keyboardist Steve Halliwell teamed up with a new rhythm section and recruited vocalist Walter Wray to form the band. Wray’s gritty vocals remind one of Michael Hutchence from INXS. The band plays good ole’ R&B inspired rock & roll with a heavy southern influence. as evident in the cuts ”Widder’s Dump” and ” Louisiana Bride”. The leax: off single "Is This Love?” wii! hook you with it’s infectious che- rus and wailing guitars. Other stand-out cuts include ’Man Be- hind the Gun’, ’Blown Away’, and ”The Sacrament’. A driv- ing rhythm section, jangly acous- tic and screaming electric gui- tars, gritty vocals, and intelligent lyrics make this an interesting al- bum. They have already had two major European smashes from this al- bum, ”I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) and ”I’m on My Way”, and are slowly edging their way into the Norht American market.
