The ‘“‘Owen’’ in question is a young ‘nan who lives about half a mile from Ardrish, at a place called Coolmeen, a4 fatherless and motherless and generally relationless young man with a consider- able income and a pedigree that reaches Biys N. With men, too (stranger still), he is a special favorite; though why, they are ever at a to determine. He shoots abominably, rides awkwardly, has asecret objection to see a trout wrig gling on a hook, and always gets severely confused when he goes in for cricket or football; yet he hasn't a name among the men of his set but ‘‘old chap"’ or “old fellow,”’ and they all clap him on the loss back when they meet him until his giasses fall from his eyes He has a tremendously erudite library at Coolmeen, worth a king's ransom, and there he squanders a good deal of his time—not the most of it, though; that belongs to Ardrish. When Owen Fitzger ald isn't in his library, he is commonly supposed to be at Ardrish, and, indeed, people (that is, his tenants) in a hurry to find him lways try Ardrish first, and the library afterward. This seems to tell a tale, but nobody can that tt does. He has been leng ami de maison at Andrish, without anything definite coming of it, that Nobedy is at all sure whether his relations with Miss Blake ive of the indifferently friendly order, or whether he is heart and soul her own, But though Nobody is thus ignorant, perhaps Somebody is not, and Miss Blake herself might have enlightened them upon this disputed subject but for the fact that she always grows strangely deaf whenever his name is introduced. For the first two or three days of the boycotting the excitement and novelty— the sensation of being cast away upon a desert island carry The Blake and his daughter triumphantly through their difficulties. The Blake's first meditations on the subject had sent him into a towering rage, the second had developed in him a dogged perseverance, the third had filled him witha sense of irrepressible mirth. No! he was certainly not to be subdued, this old gentleman, by the prospect of a bad breakfast and no dinner now and again. The old woman, say 80 Mrs. Murphy, who had been nothing in the family but a pensioner until the crisis came, had remained faithful tothem then, and now she and Rogers, The Blake’s man (an Englishman) constitute their entire retinue, Iwo or three of those who § had deserted their mistress (most unwillingly) and their comfortable quarters and good wages at Ardrish because of the threats of final extermination extended to them by the dreaded Land League, or ‘‘the Boys’? (by which name they are most generally known), had come creeping back by stealth now and then to offer their help in various ways—a help proudly declined, however, and so, after a bit, these timid visitings had died (To Le Continued.) In a downtown establishment chat sella birds, monkeys and other pets is a white bull terrier waiting for some one to come and buy him. He is a good-hu- mored dog, and likes to poke his cold nose into your hand, even if he never saw you before. But hé is cranky on the subject of having his dinner promptly at 12 o’clock. He never gets up until 12.15, but that makes no difference in his wishes. He has a cage large enough for three dogs his size, and in the cage is a flat-bottomed tin pan, in which his dinner is served. Two minutes before 12 he is caim and quiet, and there is no crowd around his cage. Promptly at 12 his performance begins, and the crowd gathers around him. He lets out a yelp and springs upon the tin pan as if it were full of rats. He barks fiercely and claws the pan, and timid females travel toward the door. Just above his cage are two parrots, which enter into the spirit of the riot, and shriek at the tops of their voices. Yhe dog pays no attention ta persons or other anin:als. The tin pan is turned bot- tom upward, wherenpen the dog tries to claw a hole through the bottom, yelping all the while, as if he could see three rats underneath. The monkeys across the way embrace various things with their tails, peer through the wires of their cages, and orate in a way that would pleas2 Garner. The guinea pigs under the monkey cage try to hide in the sawdust on their fleor, and purchasers swarm in from the grocery department next door t> see what it’s all about. None of these things disturb the dog. He turns the pan over, catches it in his mouth, hurls it to the other side of the cag’, and is on it by the time it lands. Then he pretends it is another doy, a hated enemy, and proceeds to shake the stufling out of it. Small boys stand around and cheer him on. The man who knows jt all sveps up, takes a look at the performance and finds that the dog has a bone in his throat, whereupon the boys invite him to go to various places, At 12.15 the attendant comes with the dog's dinner, ‘he performance ends, the monkeys get back and whisper to one another, and the parrots stick their heads under their wings after throwing out insinuations concerning the stupidity of dogs and people who watch their foolish performances.
