Donald MacLeod of Rose Valley mentiouedln Tun GUARDIAN of yester- day, the excitement has been greatly in- crfased by the proceedings that have gineebccurred. In view of the peculiar circumstances and sensational reports tguching the case an order for the ex- humation of the body of the deceased was made by AttorneyGeneral Peters.This was yesterday carried into effect by Coroner, Dr. Honeywell of Hunter River. At 10.11) a number of the neighbors assembl- ed and under the Coroner‘s orders opened the grave and removed the cofiin and body to a barn near _the Presbyterian mause. The following j ury was then empanelled and sworn by the Coroner : Murdock Lamont, Foreman. John A Mackenzie. Neil McLeod. Murdock McLennan. Donald Mckenzie. John McPhee. Daniel Nicholson. ` The Jury then viewed the remains, an at their request aniautopsy was made by Dr. Conroy of this City, and during the enquiry the remains were re- turned to the grave. The Coroner, jury and witnesses then repaired to the schoolhouse across the _road where evid~ ence was taken. Archibald McLeod;of Rose Valley, son df the deceased was the first witness. He deposed that his mother had lived with him during the past nine or ten yea and was in general, hearty and healthy. d She had a fainting tit at church three or ing clothes. She di-fl not examine her d - closely. Could not tell if there were marks four years azo. She died on Tuesday, 9t April. On the night of her death he an his family went to bed about 9.30 leaving his mother in the kitchen. It was he practice to stay up after th family went to bed. Abou half an hour after retiring he heard n'oise but thought it was caused by awakened by an alarm clock and got u it house near by 'and told his brother. They rs A said his mother was dead. At 12 o`c\ock he was D for the purpose of looking after a cow. t He noticed that his mother was not in her hed-room and going to the kitchen he i ound her lying on the floor, on her side, with her head towards the door. He turned her over, and at the time did not A think she was dead. He spoke to her but received no answer. He then found ‘that she was dead or dying. He went at once to his brother’s lreturned and both examined the body. V He then noticed a. mark on the cheek; it ' looked like a scratch as if she had fallen A` against something sharp. He then went to Bradalbane to notify his sister, Mrs. Matheson, and his brother Malcolm went A out to give word to some neighbors. She was buried on Thursday at one o`clock. _ He oposed to his sister, Mrs. Matheson, held. This was on account of some talk Ahe had heard about the desirability of ` such a course. The sister said his brothel' Malcolm _was not in favor of it. Half the property on which he lived belonged to his mother during her life and ,after her death would be his. i To Foreman, witness said he did not see .'A any blood on the floor or on deceased’s clothes. He noticed a little on her hands. He saw a slice of bread and a. piece of meat on a trunk in deceased's bedroom. Edith McLeod, wife of the previous 5 witness testfied that she had gone to bed l, with her husband at 9.30 leaving deceased lin the kitchen. Her husband got up at l 12 o'clock to see about a cow. Some hours afterward he came to witness’ room and ’ down stairs. Deceased had then been car~ ried to her bedroom. and had on her wear- ` on her face. Eleanor McKenzie, widow of the late John M.McKenzie, was the next witness. She went to Archibald McLeod‘s house and found deceased lying stretched on a bed with her wearing clothes on. Witness helped to remove clothes and dress the body for burial. She noticed some marks onthe face of deceased. On each side of the face there were marks and her nose was bruised. _ Her neck was blue on the left side. On moving her, blood came out of the side of her mouth. She did not suspect foul! clay- ~ Catherine McKenzie, Mrs. Malcolm KcKenzie, and Mrs. Malcolm McLeod gave similar testimony as to being called in and assisting in the preparations. Malcolm McKenzie testified that he Went to the house of Archibald McLeod with his wife and saw the body of the t deceased. _He noticed some marks on her face. He had heard noises that night be- tween 9and 10 o’clock. It was a .very- loud noise. He thought it was caused by aperson screeching or yelling with all his might and po ever. The voice was like a female voice. It was shrill. It lasted a few seconfl~. It was a long yell. It was loud and eeradually died away. It seemed like »~ sound of distress. He told his wife _ direction of Archibald McLeod’s house, as if from the field in frout.of the house. , Witness’ house is about 15 to 2.0 chains t from Archibald McLeod’s house. Malcolm McLeod, son of deceased. and Flora McLeod, his wife, testified as to having seen the body of deceased on the night of her death and noticed marks on her face. Charles S. McD'mn.ld of Rose Valley, _ school teacher, testified to having heard screeching between 9 and 10 o’clock on the night of April 10th. It was like a human voice. The sound came from the ~ direction sf Archie McLeod_'s house. He I was about 40 chains away from the house at the time, coming from Bradalbane. I made Leod this morning, and in view of the gravity of the circumstances in connection with the woman’s death my examination \ was minute and particular.
