PETERS NEW YORK. Feb. ll —— (OP) President Roosevelt's plans were the big enigma as the United States en- tered ths presidential ejection year in which the economic and social re- form known as the Roosevelt New Deal is at stake. Election Day is ov. 5. Naturally the president has been in no hurry to announce whether or not he intends to be a candidate I0 succeed himself. To ive his decision far in advance that e is not a car.- didate would automatically cost him much of h's influence in h.s own party, which would plunge right into the task of finding his successor. For Mr. Roosevelt to state a long way ahead that he is a candidate would make him a tirlzet long be- fore lt was necessary, of all those who oppo e his candidacy. It would start months of angrv debate on the ‘third term precedent" which keipt other distinguished Americans from to serve more than e ght years n the White House. Official Washington and an aleijt press corps cannot make u their minds on what Mr. Rooseve t in- tends and the bantering way 1n which he throws out half-hints has Why And Why Not Those who believe he will run ar- gue along this line: There is admit- tedly nobody in sight of quite ,Mr. Roosevelt's stature; his knowledge and experience oi’ foreign relations are vast; and he is known to hope that he may go down in historyoas the man who brought peace in a warring world. But here is the other side: Mr. Roosevelt is a. great student of Am- erican precedent. He and his advis- ers know ust how deep the megs ll is- s d term res. y how far sucha feeling could be stirr- ed up against him in s, blast oi ub- licity-snd he mav feel that he can have a voice in choosing his successor as Democratic candidate he will have achieved the perpetua- tion of his dreams of improving the lot of the "forgotten man." In a word, he may come out with a declaration that at no time did he intend w break with the third-term recedent. Or he may believe that fir: war demands his candidacy. In e latter event his acquiescence in ly be the oceclure. It is taken 0r granted that Mr. Roosevelt is too clever a. cam - er to stand for office unless is absolutely sure in his own mind that he can he re-elected. The place of the defeated candidate is not the niche he plans for himself. Most observers agree that he can have the nomination on a runway. despite the fact there are many as- pirants for it. But in consid ' whether or not the president can he re-elected, attention is usually cal.- ed to the groups who have broke sway from him. In the election of i936. the presi- dent defeated Alf. M. London Re- prublican, by more than 10.060000 votes. But the election of 1938, when the presidency was not involved, saw several ke states swing into the Re ubgicanmco umn. tmhuwd u aw g was a. par y to the not that many oi’ the so- called Qonservatlve wing of the Democratic Party came out against the administration because of the Supreme Court reflrgil-nization bat- tle of the previous year, the “purge" and other causes. How fai- such a, swing has gone, and whether the Democratic Party has permanentlv lost such voters, remains to be seen. Halifax Advance HAIJFAX, Feb. i2-(CP)—4Bsk_ ers pushed up the price o: bread i; Halifax today 8 1-2 cents wholesale for a 1 1-2 pound loaf and 10 re. tail, increases of 1 1-2 cents and two cents, respectively. Bakers said the raise in price was necessary "in view of the in- creased cust of flour and other products and equipment used in the business." -_-i___.____._ BABONS WIN FROM CAPITAL! CLEVELAND.
