TEAGH.LRS` ASSOCIATION- One of the most interesting of the annual gatherings that take placein this city is that of the Provincial Teaichers` Association. The large at- temlziiite of teachers from all parts of the lslantl, with the visitors from abroad, all interested in the great- work of teaching, indicate that the present meeting will be quite as en- gagirig and important as that of any pi-etious year. Mutual improvement, the acquisition of new ideas and ine- thotls in work and concerted action for iinproving the schools and the [pm-llc;-’s position as well, are natur- zi‘ly ainiong the objects to be served ilyisucli a gathering, but there are other and broader considerations, looking to the general improvement of our educational system and policy, which may well occupy some attention of the _` Association. _ The resolve adopted at a previous annual meeting looking to the direct representation ofthe Association in the Board of Education is, we think, a good one and ought to be conceded by the government. It would be of Iadvantage to those who have to shape 0 the policy of the country in education- al matters to be thus brought into , more direct contact with those engag- ed in teaching work. Such represen- tation would also facilitate the more frequent interchange of views upon matters which the teachers as a body EGYPTIAN RHEUMATIC OIL. For sale by all Druggists. Price 25c per bottle. Upon , them very largely depends not only what shall be the educational status of the people when our boys and girls have grown to be men and women, but also what their thoughts, aims, aspirations and usefulness will be. For with the ordinary lessons of the ,school hours the teacher by example, by the methods of government, by praise or censure and by association with the same pupils for years it may be, moulds the character, and this es- tpecially in all that pertains to the inter-relation of individuals in society and their duty toward each other. `For_this reason we cannot look too 0 closely to the qualifications and char- acters of our teachers,_ nor can we en- courage too much the efforts they are making to raise their standard of etli- To this end the meetings of the Pro- vincial Association must always be an important contributory and we trust that the present gathering will prove especially so. . l--iii i The city railway station and head- quarters of the railway system of the Island was badly located in the first place, too far from the centre of busi- ness in the city, and on low and un- healthy ground. The want of proper drainage has aggravated the evil and now fever has broken out as a. natural consequence of the mistake. In the attempt to remedy such a condition The original mistake in location ought to be overcome by the acquisition of a new site further up town, and the erection of a new station building more in keeping with the importance of the city and of the head-quarters of the railway system. , It would seem that only in this way will the public interest and the health of those in the railway service be rightly guarded. This would cost some money but it would be money well spent.
