Enc on ae co by 3 ~ - * mealies ne ie “se r i aes Che Waity Exanunet | JUNE 18, 1885. i ——= a | Editorial Notes. —Sir Peter Lumsden has asked the | promoters of the movement (to secure for | him a sword of honor, to suspend action | till his relations with the War Office are | settled. — The following telegram has been received by Lieut.-Col. Ouimet, com- manding the €5th Battalion and the Edmonton district: BaTrLerorD, May 28, 1885. To Lieut -Col. Cuimet, Comm tnding Edmon- ; ton Dristrwt [t being the intention of the Government to organize a fores to remain on duty in the Northwest fora short time after the sup- pression of the present troubles, officers and men desirous of volunteering for such service will at once send in their names by their commanding oflicers to the Assistant Adjutant General. By order of the Major-General. (Signed) W. Serra, Assist. Adjt.-Geoneral. As soon as the force is organized it is to relieve those who have been engaged in the campaiga from the beginning. Some of those will, no d>ubt, accept the proposition, with the view of settling in the conntry after awhile, but others are anxious to return, now that the fighting | is done. —The Herald is to the reseue of the liquor dealers and the uulawful liquor traffic. The Herald is extremely nice and careful in ils choice of terms. It says ‘‘as it takes two to drive a trade, the purchaser is 2 liquor dealer as well as the seller.” The Herald is right on this poiut, we admit. The fate of the liquor dealer who purchases and drinks in excess is definitely described and set forth in the New Testament Scriptures. Should the editor of the Herald} require fuller and more particular information on the point, he will no doubt receive it on application to the Bishop or a Priest of the Church. But Tae Examiner referred to the liquor dealer who sells such stuff as killed Mrs. Vance, ete, in defiance of the law of the land. “The death of Mrs. Vance would not have occurred had not the law of the land been violated. This being so, the less of her life is due to a violator or to violators of tke law. Consequently the violator or violators of the law with respect to her caused her | death, and are, therefore, guilty of a heisous crime. Even the Herald will not dispute these facts or this conclusion. Bat further, it is a notorious fact that the case of Mrs, Vance is not singular. o en ee Oe ee ! / — Ame sts faces slp nas Aetna atin hn ee OO Se SS eo —— Bs Soh Se SS ee 1 im. imo, FeLECRAPHIG NEWS. The Times says Gladstone's refusal to ac- sopt an Earldom makes an appeal to the imagination of men that will not remain ubpanswered. The Pall Mall Gazette has an editorial couched inangry terms. It says that unless the Margnis of Salisbury wishes to deepen the conviction of Russia that his ministry is a menace of war, he will cancel the appointment ef Rindolph Charchill as S-cretary for India. The Russiens already regard the Muirquis of Salisbury’s Cabinet with such suspicion that any sudden hitch may cause such a rupture of negotiations now in progress as wiil result in war. Sir Vernon Harcourt in a speech said the Tories had at last overthrown the Government by an alliance with the Parnellites with whom they had nothing in common, and were now in an embarrassed position. He hoped the Tories wouid not negotiate with Russia in the spirit of the late spoeches of Lord Randolph Churchill and the Marquis of Salisbury. Sir Vernon gave assurance however that the Tories should have fair play, and if they labored for peace they should have the support of the Liberal party. The Tories, he said, might squabble about their leaders, but the Liberals were mobil- izing their forces for a great campaign. Chey would fight for the old causea,ud with the old leader, upon whose honored head would be placed a crown of final victory. Blake on the €. P. R. Loan. Otrawa, June 18. Blake spoke last evening six hours against the preposed aid to the Canada Pacific Every liquor seller knows that modern liquor, such as is every day sold in Charlottetown, may and will, from time to time, kill those whe drink it; and, if so, are we to be charged with “ frenzied fanaticism” because we say that, should there be degrees of punishment for the damued, eternal justice will certainly doom the moderna liquor dealer to the lowest and hottest pit in hell? Let the public judge. ‘ Supreme Court, Summerside. SumMMERSIDE, June 17, 1885. Much interest was shown to day in the trial-of Ellen Dalton for stealing the child of Peter Cain. The prisoner is a widow of between 45 and 50 years of age, and the mé6ther of six living children. Her hus- band died seven years ago. She was defended at her trial by Mr. | Stewart, during which the following curious story was elicited from the witnesses examined :— The prisoner was well known around Lot 7, and was in the habit of working in the farmhouses inthe vicinity. It was rumored among the neichbors that she was on rather intimate terms with a young man named McPDougal!, at whose house she often worked, and would not at all object to hav- ing him asa stepfather to her children, and her stay and comfort ia old age, On Satur- day, the 18th ef October last, she visited the house of Richard Cornish, of Bloom- fisld, Lot 6, and there inquired about the family of Peter Cain, the prosecutor in this suit. She asked the age of his youngest child, and remarked that she had a young child in Charlottetown and was going there to gat it, and on that account ‘‘ was going to have either «a man or his money this winter.” Cornish thought she referred to MeDougall She then left the house, and during the next night a child, aged seven months, was stolen from the house of its father, Peter Cain. Early next morning the prisoner came to McDougall’s but was retused admittance. She then went to her sister's, Mrs. C»lper, and brought with her a child, which she said was her’s. That evening she went away, taking the child with her, and was arrested on the rol- lowing morning. On being asked where she got the child she said she bought it from a syuaw and prid $2 forit, The child was taken from her and returned to iis parents. Assuming that she stoled the child, the motive assigned is that she wished to per- suade McDougall that it was his. Mr, Stewart made a stirring appeal to the jury, with the result that a verdict of not guilty was returned. The cre of McNutt and Lefurgey against Matilda Ceawford, an action of ejsctmont, was trisd this evening. A ver- dict was given for the plaintiffs. Militia Appointments No. 1. BATTERY, CHARLOTTETON.
