TORONTO, July 4- (CID-Gold stocks climbed to the highest level since late April as they marked up the best gains in recent months m today's session on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The list showed a gain. of more than three points at the close on the exchanges index. 1t was the busiest session since May 31 with volume in the last hour almost equal to the total for the first folir hours and almost all activity in mining issues. ' The sudden closing lift in golds spread into base metals. Junior gold producers showed advances ranging up to 25 cents. It didn't take much to lift prices five, 10 and 15 cents. Seniors were very strong with M:- Intyre, selling odd lot for some glue, leading on a gain of 2 1-4 at Eldona was about the busiest stock on the board, turning over some 120.000 shares for IO-cent ad- vance. Waits Amulet sparkled in basa metals, adding 35 cents at $8.10. Noranda, Smeltera, Labrador, Que- mont and Hudson Bay were also features arthe group turned active- 1y Western oils were irregular with Anglo-Canadian, Calgary and Ed- monton and Royalite added five to 15 cents. At Montreal MONTREAL, July 4--(CP)—The Montreal stock exchange and curb market was generally steady to slightly improved in listless trad- ing today. Mines were on a general upswing ‘in moderately active trad- ing Industrial turnover wail a mere 14,600 shares compared with Thurs- day's 29,300. Mining trading was im- proved over the previous sessionfi with 100,900 shares traded compar- ed with Thursday’: 97,900, Closing averages indicated banks off .01 at 27.45; utilities off .3 at 71.4; industrlals unchanged at 113.4; papers up 4.09 at 266.77 and golds up 1.46 at 64.76. Of the 135 issues traded today 57 were higher, 28 lower and 5O un- changed. Three new highs and five new lows were established for the year. Papers, base metals and utilities led the market in its general up- swing but senior oils and banks moved into lower ground. Aluminum attracted attention go- ing up two points to rest at 45. Bra- lorne touched a new low of 9.50 after adding '10 cents, Hudson Bay Mining and Noranda moved up 1 1-4 and a point respectively. Frac- tional gainers included (‘ "’ - ed Smelters and International Nickel. In papers, Abltlbl, Common and Preferred, Fraser, International Paper and Price were ahead frac- tions of 1-4 or 1-2. Brazilian was shaded to 18 5-8. Lining up behind plus signs were Bell, International Utilities, St. Lawrence Corporation, Shawinlgan and Winnipeg Electric. Royallte was down five cents to 6.45 as Imperial Oil and Canadian Breweries eased 1-8 each. Walker upped 1-4 to 27. The Bank of Commerce and Bank of Nova Scotia dropped 1-4 each as Royal Bank moved up a shade. In the balance of the list Sher- win-Williams touched a new low of 16 after losing a point. Canadian Vickers also lost a point. Shaded were Dominion Textile and Asbes- tos. Moving into higher ground were Canadian Car, Gypsum and Ford A. United Asbestos attracted atten- tion in the mining section with a turnover of 26,200 shares, moving up a penny to 45.
