A Vocation For Women. SOME REMARKS BY OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES ON A PROPOSED DUAL AR- RANGEMFNT. ‘Little things mean a great deal in the sick-room. ‘Will you have an orange or a fig?’ said Dr. James Jack- son to a fine little bey, now grown up| to goodly stature, and whom | may be fortunate enough to recognize among my audience of to-day, ‘A fig,’ ans- wered Master Theodore, with alaerity. ‘No fever there!’ said the good doctor, ‘or he would have cert: ainly have said an orange.” Now,it is in jus t these: little an-important, all-important tatters that a good nurse is of iacal- culable aidto the physician. And the growing conviction of the importance of thorough training of young womea as purses is One of the most hopeful signs of medical advancement. So much has been done and is doing that the days of the Sairey Gamps and Betsy Prigs are numbered. What is there in the hour of anguish like the gentle presence, the quiet voice, the thoroughly trained and ski!ful hand of the woman who was meant by nature and has been taught by caretal discipline to render those service: which money tries to reward, but only gratitude can repay? I have always felt that this was rather the vocation of women than general medi- sal, and especially surgical, practice. Yet I myself followed a course of lec— tures given by the younger Mme. Lachapelle in Paris. and if here and there are iatrepid woman insists on tak- ing by storm the fortress of medical education, | were that of the citadel of Orieaos and she were Joan of Are returning from the field ofvictory. | have often wished that disease could be hunted by its professional antagonists in couples—a doctor aud a docior's quick-witted wife inaking a joint visit and attacking the patieut—I mean the patient’s malady, of course —with their united capacities. For 1 am quite sure that there is a natural clairvoyance in a woman which would her as much a superior of a man in some particulars of diagnosis as she certainly is in dis— tinguishing shades of color. Many a suicide would have been pre- vented if the doctor's wife had visited the victim the day be- fore it happened. She would have seen in the merchant’s face his impend- ing bankruptcy while her stupid hus- band was prescribing for dyspepsia and endorsing his note; she would recog- nize the lovelorn maiden by an i|- adjusted ribbon—a line in the features —a droop in the attitude, a tone in the voiee—which mean nothing to him, and so the brook must be dragged to- morrow. The dual arrangement of which I have spoken is, I suppose, im- practicable, but a woman's advice, I suspect, often determines her husband’s prescription. Instead of a curtain lee- ture on his own failings, he gets .a clinical lecture—on the puzzling case, it may be, of a neighbour suffering from a complaint known to village nosology as ‘acomplication of disease,’ which her keen eyes see into as much better than bis as they would thrcugh the eye of asmalleized needle. She will find the right end of a case to get hold of, and take the snarls out as she would out ofa skein of thread or # ball of worsted whieh he would speedily have reduced to a hopeless tangle.” -<]—2>- — lf every honorary colonel ofa Prus— sian regiment is to be hooted at when he passes through Pari: there are not many prominent royal perronages in Europe who will care to visitihat city. Wilds, well-known city missionary in New York, and brother of the late emineut Judge Wilds, of the Massachusetis Sapreme Court, writes as follows: “78 E, 54th St., New York, May 16, 1882. Messzs. J.C. Aver & Co., Gentlemen: Last winter 1 was troubled with a most uncomfortable itching humor affecting more especially my limbs, which itched so intolerably at night, and burned so intense- ly, that I could scarcely bear any clothing over them. I was also a sufferer from @ severe catarrh and catarrhal cough; m ~ appetite was poor, and my system a g deal run down. Knowing the value of AYER’S SARSAPARILLA, by observation of many other cases, and ‘from personal use in former years, t began taking it for the above-named disorders. My appetite im- proved almost from the tirst dose, After a short time the fever and itching were allayed, and al: signs of irritation of the skin disappeared. My catarrh and cough were also cured by the same means, and my general health greatly improved, until it is now excellent. 1 feel a hundred per cent stronger, and I attribute these results to the use of the SARSAPARILLA, which I recommend with all confidence’ as the best blood medicine ever devised. I took. it in small doses three times a day, and used, in all, less than two bottles. I place these facts at your perviee, hoping their publication may do g Yours respectfully, Z. P. Ayer’s Sarsaparilla cleanses, enriches, and strengthens the blood, stimulates the action of the stomach and bowels, and thereby enables the system to resist and overcome the attacks of all Scrofu- lous Diseases, Eruptions of the Skin, Rheu- matism, Catarrh, General Debility, and all disorders resulting from poor or corrupted blood and a low state of the system, PREPARED BY Dr.J.C.Ayer&Co., Lowell, Mass.
