I-lid sicovery turned out to be a long-lost ciave dedicated to the worship of the shaggy, goat- legged god Pan. And the la'bOiI'€I' was perhaps the first human in- side it for as long as 18 cen- turies. Archaeologists think it may prove a sensational discovery be- cause of the signiificiance of ob- jects found in the rubble, diat-' inug back 5,500 years. DESCRIBED BY TRAVELLER _There is no doubt Pan was wor- shipped there. An inscription on a marble slab records the fact in fifth-cen:tury—B.C. Greek. The cave is located on a hill- side four miles from" the site of the Battle of Marathon, fought in 490 B.C. There the ancient Greeks, who believed they were fighting with divine help from Pan, defeated. the Persians and- preserved their homeland from foreign bondage. Archaeologists knew that a cave sacred to Pan existed some- where along the edge of Mara- thon Plain, in Attica. Mention of it: had been made in an early guide - book containing descrip- tions by a Greek traveller, Pau- sanias in the 2nd century A.D. One ,day a couple of months ago, .3 laborer saw a fox vanish through a tunnel on the northern slope of a hill. Curious, he de cided to see where it led. ' FITS DESCRIPTION After crawling through the tun- nel in pitch darkness for about 60 feet, he switched on his flash- light. The sight that met his eyes sent him scurrying_ to Athens to report his find to Prof. John Paqpadimitriou, inspector of At- tica antiquities. It did not bake’ Papadimitriou long to ascertain that it was none other than the‘ long-lost cave of Pan. - The cave fits P usanias’ de- scription like a glo c. It has two big chambers connected by a long narrow corridor. Its pale, weirdly spaced sitallacltite and sta- lagmilte formations look like goat herds of Pan,. as Pausanias wrote. In places where the sta- lacfiites join the siaalagmites, re- cesses are formed. ‘These re- cesses Pausanias called baths, presumably because of the drip- Dllng stalactites. The cave has a ceiling of blue and green marble. Its over-all length exceeds 300 feet. A lead- ing Greek autliomilty on caves Says it must have been formed a million years .ago. DATES T0 3,500 B.C. ‘ an ‘archaeological view- point, however, the most im. portant thing about the cave is the rubb1e—in paints nine to 10 t8ll°:lO white and colored, no qua- ta/cums; delivered Moiitreal, Que- bec white 32%, colored 32%; wholesal-e Ontario white -and col- ored. no quota-t-ions; wholesale Quebec White 33124, colored 331/5. But between the end of the Mycensaean period and the beginning of the Classi- cal period——that is, between 1100. B.C. and about 500 B.C.—ds a 600- year break. No objects dating from that intermediaaery period have been found in the rubble. This seems to indicate that the worship of Pan in the Marathon cave must have been discontin- ued for 600 years and resumed at the beginning of the Classical period. , “This lends startling support to a myth repofited by Herodotus in connection with the resump- tion of the worship of the god Pan after the Battle of Mana- thon,” says Palpadimitriou. '0FFERED DIVINE AID The Greek historian, Herodo- tus, who lived in the 5th century B.C., and recorded the myths of his day, has related his contem- poraries’ belief in the decisive role played by Pan in that battle. On the eve of the battle, so Herodotus says. the Athenians sent the runner Phidippidis to Sparta with a desperate call for help. The Spartans were unable to send help immedialtely. Buvt Phi- dippidis did not come back empty-handed. He brought back an offer of help from Pan. As he was crossing the Moun- tains of Arcadia, Phidippidis said, he ran into Pan. The pipe. Dldying diety assured him he was still very fond of the Athenians and would soon give them ample proof of his affection. “But.” Phidippidis reported Pan_ as saying, ‘I have a «grudge against you Athenians. Why don’t you worship me any more?” Phldlppidis’ encounter with Paul was in_terpreted by the Ath. erllan warriors as a good omen and they went into battle with great zest and fury. Pan -kept his word. At one height_of the battle, he appeared to the Persians. His countenance spread terror in their hanks.
