Miss Willard has sent tu the Montreal Wit- ness the following account of Miss Scovill, who is to give Bibie readings here next week : **Miss Elizabeth J. Scovil is the daughter of a jeading citizen of Nashville, Tenn. She gives remarkable Bible readings, and is a young evangelist of great mental vigor and spiritual’) turs of customs powers. Bornand reared in the South, she has its soft tones and warm heart, combiaed with the moral and intellectual strength that characterizes types of Northern womanhood. A capital horsewoman, and devoted to an out- door life, she was accustomed to take her bible with her and to study in the great and lonely forests in her native State the three- fold revelation of heart within, nature around, and God in His inspired word. She started out to be an artist, and had a growing fame which would ere long have led her to Paris as astudent. She established a pottery for ar- tistic work in her native city, drew around her « large circle of students, became an adept in the testing of materials, owned valuable beds of clay and kaolin in different parts of the State, discovered a method of glazing 8° unique as to attract the attertion of experts in New York city, and was on the road toa most successful career in her chosen pursuit. But a heavenly voice called her to leave all this and go forth, bible in hand, trusting only in the leadings of God’s spirit as to where she shonld work and for the supply of ail her needs. That an evangelist of so much power should have come to us from the South, isa fresh indication of the mighty movement among women in that section, of which cur- rent literature has already given so many proofs.” Justin McCarthy thus sizes up the leading men of the British Commons: Physically, | am bound to admit that the Gevernment M.
