Special train leaving city 2.45 p.m. 8603 ..‘°'ACClDENT AVERTEO.-What might have been a very serious runa- way happened at Montague Monday evening, when a spirited steed owned by a young man a short distance out of town, who had driven to Montague, passing through, and when returning back, in the Cardigan road, the horse turned its occupants out of the sleigh about a mile from town and put on full speed, but when he approached the north end of the steel bridge in- stead of crossing it, he changed his mind and took a high dive jumping some twenty feet over the bank of the approach on to the lee on the west side of the bridge, sleigh and all attached thereto, and in doing so he ln some way got so mixed up with the harness, etc., that he could not ex- tricate himself, (lucky for him) as had be succeeded, he no doubt would have tried to cross the ice which is very thin and would certainly have been drowned. lt seemed that in per- forming this 'stunt he was unobserved by anyone, for the owner coming along a short time afterward, was led to be- lieve that the horse had crossed the bridge and no doubt gone home, and as he thought followed, but to his as- tonishment when he got home there was no team or even fragments of same. So he returned to Montague and after some search the horse was discovered and released (after being in this position for some fotir hours). The sleigh was broken beyond repair but the horse, barring a few scratches, was uninjured and after being stabled the night at Montague. was able to proceed home Tuesday hitched to ii new sleigh, apparently none the worse of his adventure. lt nilglit be men- tioned that at this particular place where this horse jumped over, there is no railing, along the approach, nor light, and it is hoped the authorities hi charge of this work will see to it. that there is a good strong railing placed there before such an ucclilciit may or-our again, which might not get off so easily-B.
