THE ER SE EE A Severe Blow fer Many Towns. MICHIGAN, OHLO AND TENNESSEE THE PRIN- CIPAL STATES THAT SUFFER. Axron, Ohio, Dec. 24.—A_ fierce tor- nado struck the new syndicate town of | Barberton, five miles south of this city, at half-past three this afternoon. The only building destroyed was the new shoe shop of the Creedmoor Cartridge Company, where seven workmen were hurled from the building and thrown into heaps of tim- ber and brick. One of these men was killed and six injured. The damage to the house is estimated ac $25,000. 4 TOWN WIPED OUT, Azatia, Ohio, Dec. 24.-—At 1.30 this afternoon fire was discovered in the roof of J. Martin's home, on the west side of this town, and in a few moments, aided by @ stroug wind, the flames spread over the town. The wind was blowing a gale from the northwest and carried burning shingles ever thetown. There were no facilities for checking the fiames and the fire had to exhaust itself. Two steres and eighteen buildings were totally destroyed. There was very little insurance. A HOTEL UNROOFED. Sarr Sve. Marie, Mich., Dec. 24.—A terrible northwest blizzard, accompanied by snow, has been raging in this section since 9 o'clock last night, the wind reach- ing a velocity of 60 miles per hour. The roof of the McEver Hotel was blown cff and there were several other mincr mis- haps. MORE DAMAGE IN MICHIGAN. Derriot, Dec. 24.—A terrific wind has been blowing here all day, ranging from forty-eight to sixty miles an hour, and doing considerable damage. The ferryboats at times experienced great difficulty in cross- ing the river. A shed running the whole length of the market place blew down this afternoon, injuring three persons quite severely. Thres horses were killed by the collapse and four more so badly injured that they had to be shot At Muskegon six fire alarms were turned in before noon, and the high wind caused great danger of the fire spreading. At onetime it looked as though the heart of the city would be wiped out. A RUDE AWADENING. KNoxvitLe, Dec. 24.—There was a de- cided earthquake shock here this morning about 6 o'clock. Persons from the sur- rounding country report that the shock was so sever that houses were shaken and dishes rattled. In the city many persons were aroused from their sleep and much startled by the shock. —_— nr: Lecal Notices.
