EE aE neem a HOW TO PREACH, GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY aK FOR—CLEARNESS, CERTAINTIES, MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL FIRE WANTED—LECTURING AND PREAOH- ING. (Rev. Smith Baker in Christian Union.) By common people we meup, not the educated or the ignorant, the rich or the sufleriog poor, buc the middie class of society who are neither rich nor poor, learned or igvorant, but intelligent and in comfortable circum- stances—comprising the vast majority of all our people, and from whose homes are to come three-fourths of the lead- ing men of the future—the most important part of society. 1. Preach not learnediy, gently. Give the results not its methods. Learning and cleur- pess are not the same. The penple do not want to bear a mao tell bow many timesa word orears in the Hebrew or Greek. We recently hoard an honest, scholarly man _ belore 4 congregation of common people, with intense earnestness use Hebrew, Greek, Latin and French words They doubtless thought bim learned and dall. Not long ago we listened to a sermon form acultured young preacher, just home from Germany, before a congregs- tion mostly of farmers, upon the “subjective influence of Christin copsciousness,” and as an honest deacon said, “the more he unfolded, it the more he covered it up.” What culture good tor if not to make truth plain? Theyreacher to the commoo people must be sure he understands his own thoughts, aud then seek to make- itimoos-itls for any one, to misund r 8 ard bim THE PSOPLE 2. Preach not theologically, but practicaily. Thevlogical preaching is seeking io prove a doctrine for the sake of proving it—which is lecturing, not preachiog. Practical preaching is the unfolding of some great doctrine in ite relations to human life. Tne people like to hear about the greut foundamental truths when they are made to touch human experience, but when they are only displays of metaphysical, logical, rhetorical or exegetical skill, then they become like all technical addresses, dull. The preacher has no right to turn him self into a lecturer before he is called to a theological profe-sorsbip. One ot the most learned and logical preachers in our land, who « few yeurs ago was One of the most brilliant and p pular of our preachers, has lost his hold upea the people simply because he has turned bis sermons into lectures, and seeks to prove the truth rather thau apply the truth to men’s souls. Our pews are 80 empty because so many midisters are trying to be small theo- logical professor 1 ather than proclaimer of the Gospel. We are never to preach a trath for the mere sake of provingit, but for the sake of its he'pfuiness to m°p. 3. Presey not negatively, but posi- tively, The people are never drawn or beld by doubts, supposition-, or speculations. L[ndentity has no power with the masses except as it is « positive negative. It is an as-erting sk: pticism which draws me. So in the pulpit: the majority of men are too busy and Ured to investigate trath for themselves; they look to religion a4 ia medicine as in luw, to their teachers. THEY DEMAND CERTAINTIE> Now doguwatism, but the evideacve that the preacher not only but belives wad knowa what he suys—that but intelli- of culture, is LIKE CLEARNESS. thinkes, they ure realities to bis soul. Ali tne great peotle-drawiny preachers have beeo positive preachers, There is a charm, # magnetism, about av honest positive maa which mea enjoy. Lisa proslaiming pulpit which the people love, 4. Preach not formally, but esroestly. A man may be int Higept and pac ical and positive, bus cold and duli ; you have heard such meo—good, honest, clear-headed and faithful, but powerless because there was nO carnestness in them. KE irnestoess is, after all, the art of presching. By earnestoess is not meant mere poise Or excited declams- tion, but a passion of soul which fires the brain, the will, the heart, the body, and brings the whole mao into av excitement uuder the truth. Itisa passion in delivery, sometimes calm aod sometimes agitated, but passion in the palpit -not luag power, but soul power. The people enjoy it. It is the highest arc, in song, in the actor, on the platform, in the pulpit. A few years ago | passed an evening in a cultured New Enviand city, with one of the most learned, unemotional of our American college presidents. ‘The question arose where we should spend our time. We were ioformed that io one church a very Jearned, metaphysical preacher was to lecture, aod at another chureh a popular pastor was to preach. It was left with the president to decide which we shoald atrend;—“1 am tired to-night ; let us go hear the Methodist man.” The learned president voiced human nature. It is tired, aud DEMAND+ MENTAL AND SPIBITUAL FIRE, Oar pulpits do not suffer balf so much from lack of culture asfrom dulness. There is now and then a criticism about sensatioouliim jo the pulpi‘, bat were one church suffers from a sensational preacher twenty churches are dying from a tame preaeber. 5. Preach not merely ethics, i$ THE DA ILY EXAMINER, one - SATURER - MAY 14. 1887. te ~ tm -— | after all, as the old truths which touch | the deepest{needs of men’s souls, Phe supernatural has a fascinarion about it | which draws men, and when they see ithe preacher deals with it, and has it, in hig own soul, and that it is the fact | which burns in bis heart and is the fire. which gives earnestness to his life, they | will come to hear him. Honest spirita- | ality is the greatest power & man can | have. Ao un-piritual preacher may be, cultured and dogmatic to the extreme, | but sinsick bumanity wil look upon, him as a sounding timbre!! Let a m n- be intelligent, practical, positive, earnest and spiritual, and the people) will listen to him. Dull preaching 1s a | sio. Let the preacher give the common | people the best there is in his brain | and the hottest there is in his heart, and | they will come to hear him No! truths areso gyand and fascinating to} the people as apiritnal truchs, aod no | art so high as the proclaminy ol those | truths to the souls of men. When the} people do not come to here us preach it is more our fault than theirs. The common people heard Him gladly ; and as we are like Him, clear, practical, positive, earnest and spiriusl, they willcome tohere us also. It is not more art or more ritual, or finer music or a new gospel, that the common | people demand, but more maoly, sensible, impassioned, spiritual preach- ers. | ———— Astonishing Success.
