"As is customary the President's report is in the nature of a gen- eral review. "The reports of the chairmen of line different committees will show in detail those phases of the yea.r"s work in which ohey were immedi- ately concerned. On: Road Itstall Merchants committee Report The following mporf of the Re- tail Merchants Comaritttoe was sub- mitted by the chairman. Mr. Alan H. Holman, at Tuaday night meeting of the Summeuideg8o of Trade: - "For some time many member of the Board of Trade felt that iihnra should be some canmlitee in the Board. which could help to conoolihta the and rformulpte pllfil for the retail ibunineu. of this Town. There- fore, this Fall the following com- mittee wu appointed to do thia work, and to be known as the Re- toil Merchants Committee. It was felt that certain definite classes of merchant: be represented on follows:-Mr. William Smallman. Mr. Lloyd Gonrlll And Mr. Alan Holman, representing the depart- ment not-ea. Mr; Rogera, Mr. Gerald Sheen. Mr. Maurice Mill and Mr. Ron McKenzie to represent libs inde-pendent norea. and Mr. Join Mountain. Mr. Mark GAudet. sin, to represent the in- dependent. grocers. "At the firet. meeting a general discussion on membership took place. and an invitation was ex- tended to all other organized fnarohan-to gmwpa in the Town to appoint. A representative which could sit on thin committee. So far no other representatives have joined Jihio committee. "At this meeting certain nia- uuderatanduinga AA to the power of this committee were straightened out. It was decided that this com- to enforce any decisions that were made by it. and that all that could -be done was to suggest such ideas as were approved by its members. Closing noun "me first task undertaken by this committee was to make up A suggested list of -closing hours. tholidaya and Christmas hours. which were thought to be of the best interest to the consuming pub- lie and the merchants. The co- operation in canrylng out this sug- gested program was very gratify- ing. and shows that the stores in this Town can co-operate in mat- ters such as iihie. ”l'hm-e are still classes of busi- nesses in the town which have no undenstandtng of closing hours. holidays. etc. Most prominent of tlhese are the lndaepenclent grocers. The Retail Merchants Committee, as pointed out above. has no power attached to it. except that of sug- gestion, but this comrmlieee feels that a sane and sensible agreement as to hours could be decided on. if these stores would meet to- gether and come to some under- standing. Certainly it is the wish of no one that these sl.o'rea.close at five o'clock with the other busi- nesses of the Town. but it is felt that they should close at some de- finite time, whether eight. ten or one am. ”The Retail Merchant: Commit- tee of this Board did consldera-ble work in organlatng the excellent suggestion of Mr. William Fridaen. "Santa Claus Lane". Although the lighting was somewhat slow in starting owing to the damp and windy weather, and the fact that there were some ”da.rk" spaces in the Lane.
