‘DAILY HXAMINE TNS A A SS es Maxwell Identified. HIS AGFD FATHER CONFRONTS HIM IN HIS CELL. Che mystery of the identity of Max- well, the murderer of C. A. Preller, is cleared at last. On the 23rd inst., his father, Samuel N Brooks, of Hyde, Kng., called at the jail When the old man saw Maxwell he cried out: “Hugh! Hugh! It isindeed you!” The _ pris- oner rose, and for the first time, seemed to lose contro! of himself. “It is, father, itis I,” said he Then, immediately controlling himself, he stopped and sat down on a chair. The father addressed his son, and said: “Ob,Hugh, you had better be dead than here. Your mother’s health is gone and the family ruined!” and, sobbing, tell into the armsof the guard. Maxwell sat in his chair looking annoyed, and, but for the first recognition of his exhibited no emotion whatever. Mr. Brooks afterwards said that he had no doubt whatever but that his son was in- sane. He said Hugh left home last January, ostensibly to go to Dublin, siace which time the family bad heard nothing of him. ;-_<. - Firing Up in the Crematory DRYING THE MASONRY PREPARATORY TO EXPERIMENTING ON ANIMALS. The post-office laws and regulations forbid the mailing of lottery schemes ; through their operation the nefarious business Of the swindlers resident in the United States has been largely sup- pressed. But the thieves bave sought another channel, and in it have operated with great Here is an illus- tration: Driven from the United States by prosecution, a band of rich swindlers located in St. Stephens, New Bruaswick ; from that retreat they sent flamiog lottery circulars by the million, all over the United States, but were careful to mail uone to the citizens of the country wherein they had located ; thus they violated no law of New Brunswick or the Dominion of Cauada, andfor their stealings from citizeus of the United States could not be extradited and punished. It was a dead open and shut steal, and there was never a drawing of prizes at all; no One ever received a prize, and| millions of dollars were sent them from the United States. These protect- ed thieves are millionaires, and live in the greatest luxury. About a year ago one of the shrew- dest and richest swindlers in New York went to Europe to look the ground over with a view to finding a point of protection there, and flooding the United States with lottery circulars on SUC CCBS. the plan of the St. Stephens, New Brunswick, steal. A short time there- after an associate of this swindler began to take measures for secur- ing the names and addresseg of ail the farmers and laboring men and women of the United States; this they havedone with a fair degree of thoroughness. To these millions of names they propose during the autumn sud winter to mail their lottery schemes in sealed envelopes. There will never be a drawing, and never willa prize be sent to any One; it is simply a straight steal. > o_ —_ — Many people take no care of their money till they come nearly to the end of it; others do just the same with their time, and with Quick Despatch. tuling, Numbering and Perforating for the Trade promptly attended to BLANK BOOKS A SPECIALTY!
