The British were defeated and their vessel captured. The victory of the Ameri- cans came but five days before Per- ry’s triumph on Lake Erie, and was peculiarly welcome since it relieved the popular depression caused by thc capture of the Chespeake by the Shan- non three months before. The engagement of the Enterprise and the Boxer attained a mournful celebrity by reason of the fact that| both Commanders Bllrrows of the, American ship and Blyth of the' British ship were slain. Longfellow, then a child, heard the booming of the guns over the tide, and as a poet celebrated the tragedy of the two captains who lie buried side by side in n Portland cemetery. Dawson, B.A., pf Moullt Stewart on “The minist- er’s personal life. and its relation to his work.” An interesting discussion followed the reading ofthe paper. The question of the receipts and ex- penditures of the Circuits and Mis- sions on the District received careful consideration and the necessary grants were recommended to the Mis- sion.Board. The appointments and assessments were made to the Cir- cuits for Supernumerary, Conting- ent and General Conference Funds. Communications were received and rcad from the Missiolfary Secretary, the Secretary of the Sustentation and Educational Funds, and arrange- ments were made to raise the amounts needed for the several funds. Arrangements for anniversary meetings of these funds were left to each Circuit to arrange. It was re- solved that a Missionary Campaign on all the Circuits of the District should be held from October the 12th to the 19th, including two Sundays. The arrangement for the meetings was left in the hands of the District Missionary Committee. Mr. Henry Smith of Charlottetown and Mr. G. H. Jenkins of Pownal were appointed to attend the Mis- sionery Convention at Amherst, N. S., on October Sth, when it is ex- pected that all the ministers from the Conferences of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and P. E. Island will be presént to meet with the Mission Board and to consider questions re- lating to the Mission work of the church. A letter was read from the Evan- gellstic Committee of the Conference recommending special EVE-l\S°1l5I1i° services on all our Circuits and more care in the administration of the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, and the more emcient carrying out of other departments of church work. A motion was submitted urging that at least three days be arranged for the meeting of the annual Dis- trict meeting st Cornwall next J\1n°., and the matter was referred to the Chairman of the District for ar- rangement.
