We know of no other way except plowing it up, putting On maoure, giving complete and thorough ecvltivation, and then sowing down to cloverand timothy, and blue grass if field is intended for a permanent pasture. Get the land in shape to pro- duce the grasses, and you will not likely have much trouble with sorrel. Indiana was safely docked at Halifax on Thursday. One bundred dock Jaborers and two hundred of the ships crew assisted in the work. The seamen ot the Indiana created fun for themeelvs and amusement for spec. tators by several tumbling into the water. But there was one accident which marred the success of the docking so far as the sailors of the Indiana were concerned. Oveof their number—Aotoine Johnston —was at work on a scaffolding from the ship’s side, when, in some way, his foot caught in a rope and he fell. Had he dropped intothe water everything would | have been well, but the poor sailor struck a float in the receding water 14 feet below and suffered severe injuries. A leg was broken, ribs fractured and head badly cut. Tue demensions of the Indiana are as fol- lows: pendiculars, 348 feet. feet ll inchee. Extreme displacement, 24 feet water line, 9,195 tons. Length between draft marks, 332 feet 6 iuches. The Iudiana draws 24 feet foreward and 26 feet aft. It will thus be seen that the dry dock easily holds the Indiana. The dock i# 601 feet long 102 feet wide on the top and 80 feet wide on the bottom. The Jock has an 85 feet enterance, It was made io take in ships of the dimensions of H. M.S. Inflexible. Later in the day he met Mr. Greeley and said : “I’ve stopped your paper.” “There must be some mistake,” replied Horace, “for I just came from the ottice, and when I left the presses were ruvning as usual, the clerks were as busy as ever, (he compositors were hard at work, and'the}business was going on the same as yesterday and the day before.” “Oh !’ said the old subscriber, “I didn’t mean that I had stopped the paper, I stop- ped only{mycopy of it, because I didn’t like ove of your editorials.” “Pshaw!” retort- ed Greeley;“‘if you expect to control the utterence of the Tribune by the purchase of one copy aduy, or if you think to find any newspaper worth reading which will never exprese convictions at right angles with your own, you are doomed to disap- pointment.” ————iP>> 2-<——-——— Reports to the C.
