Only' asithe alphabet and the art of reading- are necessary to the literatureof all pro- fessions, so manual training fits a boy to begin his_apprenticeship to any trade with greater aptitudes and correspondingly oetteii chances to be a skilful, excellent workman. I I hope it will be understood that man ual training does not aim at preparirigthe pupils to earn their living through man- ual work, although it does help them in that honorable and laudable purpose after they take up their life work what- ever it may be. Because the boys like it. It helps to keep them longer at school and thus gains fcr them a thorough-edu cation in other respects also. Sir . William Macdonald has certainly added another magnificent gift to those* already conferred on Canada, and I am sure you will all agree with me _that in selecting Prof. Robertson to assist in this great 0 ~:< he h i- chosen 'a man whose ability and personality would go for to secure the success of any under- taking. We have all heard of the gener- ous gifts of Sir William C. Macdonald to the cause of higher education in Canada; I and now he has put the people of Canada under a new debt to him by having placed _ in the_hands of Professor Robertson a sum sufficient to provide manual training for the boys attending the public schools of at least one city or town in every prov- ince of Canada for a period of three years. They are expected to serve as ob'ect _ J for the amount borrowed and the money lessons to be observed by all interested. W-Jen returned is again mbe plmgd in the fun l. A By the end of the present year provisi n will bemade in equipment and instruc- tors for training about live thousand boys and several hundred teachers. One may truly say that the scheme is one of high statesmanship in its plan, methods and endowment. PLEA FOR THE GIRLS. If I may be allowed to refer to one thing., which the Macdonald manual training _ fund does not provide for,it will be rather to suggest what some llkeminded bene-- factor may do for the girls than _to imply that Sir William’s benefaction is not com- plete in itself. . The fund provides for the training tf boys only. We all know that wornaiikindi is the better half of mankind; ~ ~ " Manual training and practical instruc- tion for girls in schools are not 'less portant than for boys, though the subjects and exercises for girls would naturally be different from those for boys. Such ex- Q ercises are admirably furnished 'by courses ‘ of study and practice under 'the heading- of domestic science; and it argurq well to know that in other countries and in other cities domestic science for the girls in the schools has followed close on manual training in woodwork for the bo overestimate the value to gh-lsf ‘ traininixzg afforded byfelasses in cooking, . “ ' 'nt,aaysthepaper. has launderywork, generalhousehaldeeouomy- i and soma-‘slight primary wq‘¥\flWl°°° with first-dd' to the kaonleyk capable-of sity who are unable' to pay their way.
