A Versatile Genius. That excellent literary authority The Critic tells us that F. Marion Crawford, the novelist, is ‘‘a jack of all trades.’ He wanted to cross the ocean once and saved cabin passage by jumping aboard & small boat and sailing over. He want- ed a house to live in, so he rolled up his sleeves and built one. Of course piumb- ing was necessary, so he escaped the ex- pense and unpleasantness of a plumber’s bill by doing the work himself. He de- sired silver statues for bis drawing room and forthwith proceeded to carve them. He wanted shoes for his family, laid in & dozen or more lasts and a ton of leather and made the shoes himself. In view of all these things we wonder at the pop- ularity of Mr. Crawford’s hooks. The shipmasters must feel bitterly toward him, the silversmiths would be right in pronouncing a boycott against him, the shoe dealers must have it in for him, the architects and carpenters must re- gard him as an enemy and, last of all, the plumbers’ union must have arrayed itself against him, and with reas: n. But we have always had faith in Mr. Crawford. We predicted great things for him at the beginning of his career. Mow handy a literary man like that must be about the house !—-Atlanta Con- stitution, Cigars and Smokers. The late William 8S. Roose, who for 60 many years sold cigars at the hotel stands owned by him in this city and at his several stores, always disliked to sell cigars by the box to any of his reg- U.ar customers. His theory was that eustomers who had a box of their favor- | ite cigars handy were apt to smoke too | have been untying knots. many, and the inevitable result was that they svon got tired of any favorite, while they would smoke the same cigar for years without any but pleasant con- seyuences if they bought them in small quantities, he only remedy that I know is for a person, the instant he feels any unpleasant effect from acigar, to throw it away, rinse the mouth cut With cold water and drink a large glass of the same. A large quantity of cold Water in the stomach seems to neutral ize the effects of the cigar better than anything I know of. My experience {s that cigars are a barometer by which persons are readily forewarned as to their physical condition. The mere fact that a regular smoker does not want ta smoke shows that there is something wroug with him, and it is best to pax atteation to the indication and leave cigars alone until he feels that he can enjoy them.— Washington Star.
