CAMPING TIMES.-The Maritime
Y. M, C. A. Camp is to be held this
summer as usual at the regular camp-
ing grounds at Big Cove, N.S., from
July 2 to 16, and will be under the
leadership oi Rev. E. W. Forbes of
Sydney. It is the st. John local
team that will camp at Robinson's
Point. Hs already referred to. The
Big Cove camp promises to be even
more widely patronized by the boys

Convent, Charlottetown, was the

Laura McCabe of Stanhope became
the bride oi Mr. Augustus McQuaid,

bride was attended by her sister, Miss
Maggie McCabe, while the groom's
brother Mr. Tobias McQuaid, was
best mon. The choir of St. Joseph’s
Convent rendered several appropriate
selections. 'llhe Sanctuary was beauti-
lully decorated with flowers, etc. The
popularity ot the young couple was

NEGRO MINBTRELS.
The first actor to win fame by im-
personations of negro characters was
Thomas D. Rice, who was born in
New York 105 years ago today. Rice
was the highest paid actor of his
time, and his success was such that
he soon had a host of imitators, and
thus became the founder ot negro.
rninstrelsy, long a favorite form of
amusement on both sides of the At.-
iantic. Rice 'made his first appear-
ance in a blacklace role while playing
small parts in a Louisville theatre.
His imitation of an aged and comical
negro slave, 'called “‘Jim Crow,"
scored a hit, and the character was
adapted to a farce in which Rice play-
ed before enthusiastic audiences
throughout the United States, Can-
ada and England. In the latter coun-
try lie was the theatrical sensation of
the period, and England's greatest
actors, including Mncready, played to
small houses during Rice‘s stay in
London. Rice married an English
girl, thedaughter of Mr. Gladstone,
a theatrical manager. From about
-1830, when Rice inaugurated negro
minst.relsy_ until 1860, when he died,
constituted the popular period of
that type of amusement, and since
then it has gradually declined.
