To the Lditor of the Examiner. i Dear Sir, -—I noticed in Saturday's edition ;of your paper a notice in reference to all liquors taken as samples, the gauger, Mr. | | James Le.wson, being required to hand over to Mr, Curtis, “Chief Landing Waiter and Searcher,” and self-styled Surveyor, the samples after ten days tal eatroyed In behalf of the Scott ‘ e generally, I ask if f id not’ good of the cominunity that the matter of destroying these samples be put into the hands of some known and tried temperance man? T could consistently entertain grave . doubts about the proper destruction of said samples, when left in the charge of any one who had a strong appetite for the soul destroying fluid. Viewing this matter strictly from the temper- ance side of the question, 1 would ask . why was the duty of dest-oying samples taken fron. the gauger, who is known to be a total abstainer himself and a man of principle, ‘who, for conscience sake, would gladly not only destroy the samples, but all the liquor in existeneé? I think this i¢ a matter that shouldbe taken eld of by temperance organ- izations all thréweh the iniom » Let them remember that the Government Officials are only their servants, and let.them dare to assert their rights. And if their servants will not faithfully carry out their instructions, viz, —to put those officials ont and put better men in their places. It would be a great improvement to have any honcst man di third or fourth rate ability, to be in the places of these over-bearing, ‘audacious sibédive, who seem to think they ars something more than comraon, whom to criticize would be an outrage for which the offender should receive some terrible punish- ment. I call on temperance men to see that this abuse of power is brought to an end at ence, Let whcever it may concern make a ccte of this—that when a majority of the people, by their votes, make a law to promote temper ance, they will be heard. The Council of Ministers had decided to adopt this date provided that General Dolgorouki, Governor General of Moscow, was favorable. It was the information furnished by the latter on This decision discontents every one, as it will furnish aliment to the party of the Grand Duke Constantine, which bases its hopes on the theory that a Russian sovereign is not really an Emperor until he is crowned, and that the people should de- pose the prince who refuses to submit to the ceremony. . It was resolved in the same Council that to mitigate the evil effect of this decision that their Majesties would svon pay a private visit to Moscow, ———» <> e@-—-. — Uses of a Willow. The willow is seldom looked upo nas good for anything else but fuel, yet it possesses wood of much value for other purposes. In England, where it is often sixty or seventy feet high in twenty years, there is no wood in greater demand than good willow. It is light, very tough, soft, and takes a good finish, and will bear more pounding and knocks than any other wood grown there, and hence its use for cricket bats, for floats to paddle-wheels to steamers, and brake blocks to cars. Itis used extensively for turning, planking coasting vessels, furni- ture, ox-yokes, wooden legs, shoe lasts, ete, Fuller says;—‘‘ It groweth incredibly fast—it being a by-word that the profit by willows will buy the owner a horse before that by others will pay for the saddle.” The basket willow, well cultivated, will yield a net income of $150 a year to the acre. On the whole, therefore, it wonld seem that the various kinds of willow, the economic value of which has been hitherto entirely over-looked in our country, are eminently deserving of attention and will amply reward those who cultivate them. o<“an>s Personai.
