NOVEMBER £5, IKE. THE SMELT INDUSTRY. The prevailing mild weather and the uoolearly beginning of the smelt fishery haaledoothe shipment of considerable quantitlesof emelts tothe Boston and New York markets under quite unfavor- able conditions. Continued mild weather such as frequently prevails here and in the Eastern States durlnlz November renders it VFW difficult to place the fish on the market in good order, especially when the rules laid down for packing and shipping are not carefully observed. It is very regret- ‘ table when the lirst shipments reach the market in bad order as it prejudices the product of the entire season. The smelt industry has become so im~ portant that it ought to be brought under official supervision. It would seem to be distinctly in the interest of this industry if shipments were limited to begin earlier than the first of December, when established cold weather will enable shipmentsto be made without loss. THE LATE FRANCIS BAIN. ‘ The large granite boulder beside the Court House which was placed there some timeagu by the Natural History and Antiquarian Society in memory of the ui.. r.\nci»`n»in,wllii.¢ li.. seam are brief but interesting ceremony this afternoouatbalfpaet two o'clock. This natural monument, so fitting to a self-taught geologist, has recently been completed by the addition on one side ol a bronse tablet bearing a suitable in scription. His Honor the Lieutenant Governor will perform the ceremony of unveiling and brief addresses will be delivered by him, by His Worship the Mayor and prominent members ofthe Society. It is fitting that the good work done by Mr. Bain in giving an impetus to nature study in this Province shouldbe publicly recognlsed,by the Societyof which he was an honored member, and by the community in which he lived and which has profited by his lal-or and research. THE KINGDOM Of NORWAY- In some respects the people of Norway are the most democratic in the world and yet they have chosen to themselves a King bye tremendous majority of thc popular vote. More recently the Social- lata and Republicans have withdrawn their opposition and decided to make the election of the New King unanimous. King Haakon VII-the name is spoken Hokon-thus becomes the only reigning sovereign who holds his throne by the free choice of all his people. In another respect his position is unique. Norway and Sweden had an order of nobilltv. According to the Norwegian constitution no new title can bc created apnrt from the t/enure of oiilce, and with the dcath of the members of the existing nobility all personal honors, distinctions and privi~ legea belonging to the nobility shall cease. Thus the Kings of Norway will in future not be surrounded by a titled aris- tocracy. Thr-y will be in close touch with the people in the most democratic of Kingdoms. We quite agree with The Patriot that some simple and inexpensive method of collecting vital statistics is an imperative necessity in this Province. Some Iysars ago thc \Vomcn's Council took the matter up and if we remember rightly Hon. Benjamin Rogers who was then Provin- cial Secretary prepared a bill dealing with the matter. It was held over owing to some opposition on the ground of expense and other grounds and dropped out of sight. The Guardian has been for ten years past the frequent advocate of the system of registering births, deaths and marriages which prevails in the nd- jacenr. Provinces. Very little work has been done so fer by the grain elevators constructed and maintained at great costin Halifax and St. John in connexion with the Intercol- onial. Year by year it has been given outasan expectation that quantities of grain would be handled during the en- suing winter, ami we notice thc sanic thingina recent Halifax despatch with regard to the elevator at that port. We fear the expectation will be disappointed, asit wnsin most previous years. The I. C. Rcannot comp ete with the shorter routes in the economical carriage ofgnlin. And it would be a mistake to_carry it ut alone. R.,L. Borden during the recent by- election campaigns gave out that he is quite willing that the indemnity bill of last session shall be reconsidered. This is well, so far. It would have been much better to have duly considered the matter and rejected tht-bad features when the billwaa before Parliament. In view of the general and notorious nnpopularlty of the measure in tho country there is now an apparent disposition on the part of both the Govemment and Opposition tomake some concessions. The Minis- ters' pensions must go altogether over- board or be greatly: modified. It_ is evi- dently hoped by some small concession like this to save to thc Senators and Members the extra thousand dollars they grabbed last year. This would never sat- isfy the country. The gnib made bythe Parliament men is justly looked upon as the most selfish, sordid and obnoxious feature of the entire measure. The other features were added to iloat It through. Any reconsideration of the bill ought to strike at the most objectionable features. 1-.;-1 COUGHERS, HAWKERS, SPITTERS Public expectoratlcn is against the common law, against the laws of health also. When you see a young girl pnle_and ailing and wasting away, you know that budding wonianhoof is making new denlun s upon her blood supply which shc cannot mect. Month after mont-h ller health, her strength, hor very life, is being drained away. N0 food and no cure can do her any good. Common medicine cannot save her from broken health and a hope- less decline. New blood is the one tiiing that can innke her a healthy. cheerful, rosy-checked girl. Ami Dr. \Vlllinins' Pink Pills actually make new blood with every dose. That is the whole secret of how they have saved thousands of pale, anaemic girls from an early grave. Miss Alice Uhaput, aged 17 years, living at 475 St. Tinlothee street, Mont- real, gives strong proof of Dr. \Vil- li:ims` Pink Pills to cure. "A .couple of years ago," says Miss Chaput, “I was an almost continuous sufferer. and became so weak I could hardly go about. I suffered from frequeni and prolonged spells of dizziness. The first benefit I noticed from the use of the pills was an improved appetite, and t-his seemed to bring much rel ef. I con tinued taking the pills untill had used six boxes, when I was fully restored to health, and I have not had a day’s illness since. I cannot praise Dr. Williams' Pink Pills enough for the great good they have done me." ' _ A pale anaeinlc person needs only one thing-new blood. Dr. \Villlnms‘ Pink Pills do one thinfr onlv-they make new blood. That is a l they do, but they do lf- weil. They don't act on the bowels. They don`t bother with mere symptoms. They wou’t cure any disease t at isn't caused originally from bad blood. But when Dr. Williams' Pink Pills replace bad blood with good blood they strike straight at the root and cause of all common diseases like headaches, aideaches, backaches, liidne t.roub|e,liver complaint. blliousness, indz gestion, anaemia, neuralgia, sclatica, ocomotor ataxia and the special secret troubles that every woman knows but that none of them like to talk uboiil-, even to their doctors.
