Editorial By Marko Peric onderful. Here’s another editorial pleading for us to get in- volved in saving the planet. Some people just don’t have time to do anything. And quite frankly, some just don’t care. Is that what you’re thinking right now? If so, answer these questions: -- How many tonnes of garbage went into a landfill today? -- How many litres of sewage were dumped into a river today? ¢ -- How much smoke will foul the skies tomorrow? Too global, too big for you to think about? Look at this another way: -- How many tonnes of garbage were thrown out on campus yesterday? -- Howmany litresof sewage went into the Hillsboro River today? -- How much smoke will pour from that stack at the utility building tomor- row? Still not convinced? Well, it’s easy to ignore environmental causes. One can write them off as being too militant, too crazy. The average per- son really doesn’t want to ride around in a rubber dinghy chasing Japanese whaling boats, or chain him or herself to a tree in protest. And there’s the ever-present feeling that the problem isjust too big. Extreme measures are not for everyone, and this writer cannot endorse many of the radical ac- tions taken by certain or- ganizations or the fanati- cal ideas these groups of- environmental LIDS T EAU SD FLD ON MEME re nvr er the ends do not justify the means. The rest of us could learn by the example of Greenpeace or the World Wildlife Federation, for instance. . That doesn’t mean you should become a fanatic, but how about putting your garbage in the cans provided around ;, campus instead of dumping it on the ground? Why not use a refillable mug for your coffee instead of a styrofoam cup? Why not put on a sweater instead of cranking up the heat? Why not take those old papers to be recycled, instead of throwing them out? Many of the action we can take to clean up this planet are just common sense, and some, such as reusing prod- | ucts, canactually save money. There’s nothing to be lost by taking environ- mental issues to heart. And if we don’t start paying more attention to the state this planet is in, we may not have a planet to call our own much longer.
