H.T.W. Grant. 413. 0f Halifax, commander of the new Canadian cruiser Ontario recently commis- sioned in Britain, will be recog- nized as senior Canadian officer of the OO-ship fleet that will even- tuaily be operating in the Pacific with the Royal Navy, it was learn- ed here today. Speculation had been that ii Canadian ships were placed under a single h mmand. the mmnnd er might be Capt. Harry G. De Wolf. t2, Bedford, N.S., assistant chief of the naval staff. However. it now is indicated the warships will likely serve in scat- tered unlts with various British flotillas. Without an overall com- mandsr, the Canadian fleet would recognize Capt. Grant. the senior flcer, as such and he would be the highest Canadian authority in those waters. This still does not exclude the possibility of the eventual appoint- ment of a Canadian commander of Canadian Far East operations and bases. Naval spokesmen have been silent on who this might be. One of the biggest problems in connection with Canada's Pac- ific force was the job of providing Canadian aircrew, as far as pos- aibie. for the two big fleet aircrew camera, recently acquired from Britain. Canada's Biggest These ships have a complement of 1,300 men each and are Canada's biggest warships. The cruisers Uganda and Ontario carry about 000 men each. Some of the aircrew men will be drawn from the 800 Canadians in the Royal Navy Fleet air arm and others will come from R.C.A F. personnel voluntarily transferred to the senior service. These men will change to dark blue uniforms and will assume Navy rank and pay. The fliers aboard the two unnamed carriers likely will use torpedo bombers and rocket planes. They will take refresher courses with the Royal Navy fleet air arm before going into the R.C.N., but once aboard the new ships they will be considered Canadian personnel in every respect. The matter of training an air arm once again raises the question of Canada's continuing interest in an all-Canadian fleet air arm and the eventual disposition of fleet sir arm stations already established in Canada. Meanwhile,- scores of Canadians have been selected for fleet air arm training and have taken courses at Collins Bay, near Kingston, Ont. HWQi/Qr. there still is not n suf- ficient number ct guarantee s. con- tinuing flow of Canadian replace- ments on the two new carriers so the 'R.C.A.l". has been asked- to canvass its aircrew surplus. As a result. a substantial back-log oi potential air arm men has been uilt up and is building. Canadian Press B Writer) LONDON - The Conservative largest group in Britain's wart e coalition government, en- ters this year's knock-down gen- eral election campalgn with a platform centred on the continu- ation of “free enterprise" and the wrsonsi ‘popularity of its lender. lnston hurchill. And it has conceded that its main opposition in the country's first national voting since 1935 will come frown the Labor Party whose leader, Clement. Attlee, has been deputy Prime Minister for the last nve years. The Conservatives ran 515 can- didates 10 years ago and elected 3d’! members in a dl5-seat Hcusc of Commons. Now there are 36B Conservative and Unionist mem- rs oi whom a7 are retiring. Partial redistribution of constit- uencies means there will be M0 seats at stake on voting da . For these the Conservatives wil have between 560 and 000 candidates. With the Labor Party urging nationalisation of the nation's major resources and financial in- stitutions, the Conservatives take the apposite stand, leaving the voting ublic n clear-cut choice. "At ts head of our mainmnat we, like the United States, ily the flag of free enterprise," said conference in London. "Coutrnii for control'a sake is senseless." That is the keynote of the Con- servative Party's program. While Mr. Churchill and his chief lieut-i snants have warned that many wartime controls will have to be‘ continued to guarantee equitable distribution of scarce commodities and avoid post-war inflation, they have prom sed to lift restrictions as soon as conditions pennit.
