A teW inva root contra with McKenzie and Mano was eriti i ty Mesers. BE... Livernash, W. A. E. W liv, | ex-surgeon of the Montreal Police, and | Max l.endreville, a French-Canadian. | The gentle men form the deputati nb sent out by the miners of the Kliondyke to represent their grievauces to the Govern. | ment, and to endeavour to obtain a modie | All t fication of the regulations. ree are owvers of rich claima, Their attack up the McKe z:e~Mann contract was ad . the presence of a large gathe ring of Sena- tore, and a sprinkling of members, wao | had sssembied in response to an invitation ? | from the miners themselves. WOULD KILL TBE KLONDIKE. The concessions to McKenzie and Mann | were sO extensive and the restrictions upon | miners #0 irksome that unless modified | + ; the present bill would killthe Klondike as effectually as though the Government had deliberately set about accomplishing that object. The areain which prospecting was now being done, and in which 2,000 miners were at work, was limited to 864, 000 acres. The land grant to McKenzie and Mann wae nearly four times that amount. Lt might be true that the coutractors could not begin to select lands until the 15th cf June, as Mr. Sifton had said, but the prospector burdened with | his outfit could not get into the country until late in the spring, and it would take him practically six months to do the pros- | pecting necessary todejermine him where | to locate his clain in"the course of which he would have to dig below 60 feet ot frozen ground. DESTRUCTIVE T2 PRO-PECTORS. The right given to McKenzie and Mana { river it to the interests of prospectors, and would place him completely in their power. There were many rich claims om the bili- sides of Bonanza avd Eldorado creeks which bad not been taken ap because the minere were shut out from access to the water below. These would fall into the hands of McKenzie and Maun. The slopes were Jined with timber, and with the priv- ileges of leasing timber mits which the contractors enjoyed they might just as well bavetheclain.s. The miners could not get along without timber, which was indispen- sable for thawing the frozen soul, but they could obtain it only on such terms as McKerzie and Maon might dictate. When the length of claims was cut down from 500 to 100 feet prospecting stopped. Miners were not willing to risk their lives for the limited opportunities thus offered. He contrasted the position of the free miner, who had to pay licence fees and ten per cent. royalty, with that of McKenzie and Mann, who would pay no license fees and one per cent. He prote-ted ayainst the establishment of such an autocracy in the country. One of the Ministers said to him,“ Probably Mc- Kenzie and Mann would give you better termes than the Government regulations. ” What a position this was to put Canada into, to place these contractors in a su- perior position tothe Government itself, Canada had a wonderful inheritance in that northern empire, and it was of tre mendous importance that it should be established on a firm and just foundarion. TO CANAL THE YUKON. The chief speaker was Mr. Livernaeh, who argued that by constructing a canal 1 through the flat district of the Yukon would be possible to transport freight more cheaply than by the Stickeeo river, At present for five months of the vear, which is all thatthe Stickeen route is open for, tran-portation by the Yukon river can be done just as cheaply. THE STICKEEN ROUTE, i (Juestioned with reference to the Stickeen rou.e, Mr. Livertash said be bad come to give facts, and notopinions. All he couid say was that in coming out from Dawson | be met a man who had come in by the Stickeen route from Wrangel, and lhe was the most forlorn creature he ever This wan had been three months in getting to the same point parties from Nkaguay and Dyea bad reached in two weeks, and he said, “If] conld find tke man that told me to come this way I'd hang him ” ( Laughter.) The sat j-et was “The Invocation of the Saints” Father Gallant p-cv d from scr’ptnre and tradition that in all ages the invocation of the -aints was adoctrime of the Cathosic Church.
