Illicit Whiskey Still Seized, Officers of the Law Successfal They Make a Big Spill. Souris, Dec. 24. Excise officers J. C, Nash and 'T. Moore, Customs officer M. J. Foley, and constable Lavie raided MeCarthy’s illicit distillery at daylight this morning, and found all in readiness for an operation. The oflicers seized still, still head, worm and two goose- necks, and furnace door, and brought the articles into Souris station. They also stove in two puncheons and ran off 180 gallons of fermented wash, ready for distilling. They found and seized a barrel of wash, also in readiness, in the upper part of the house, and emptied it out on the roadway. About 7 o'clock this morning a horrible accident occurred at McDonald’s ‘lime rock mine, at Graham's siding, near Krookfield, by which four persons lost their lives and two received injuries. Preparatory to com- mencing work, a quantity of dynimite was taken into the cook house where the men got their meils, and where the covking is done, to warm. It became overheated, and exploded with terrible effect, shattering the building Alex. McDonald, the owner of the mine, James Hoffman, Edward Wessel anc. Finlay McDearmid were instanly killed. Two others who were in the cookhouse at the time were both badly wounded. Pictev, Dee. 25. It is learned that a terrible collision oc- curred this morning between Valley and Union Stations, on the Pictou Branch of the J. C. R.
