W. Murphy (PC—Lambton West), chairman of the Commons mines committee, inaugurated annual study of the government *| travel bureau by saying that the bureau has been tossed about be- tween government departments since its inception in 1934. It was in sorry shape through no fault of its own, Mr. Murphy complained. Canada’s tourist in- dustry last year netted $352,000,- 000 but this was only a quarter By IAN MACDONALD ST. JOHN'S, Nfld. The plants are the North Star Limited near Corner and Industry Construction Lim- .| itedo f St. John’s. Mr. Smallwood made the an- mouncement during second read- ing of two bills which would en- able the government to find new management for the plants. More money was needed for foreign advertising. - Art Smith (PC—Calgary South) said he questions the premise that the bureau should be work- ing full-time to attract United States visitors when many Cana- dians hadn't seen much of their own country. GONE TOO FAR Moreover, he said, the bureau has gone too far in the idea of representing Canada as a wilder- ness. Americans tended to expect nothing but cowboys and Indians on arrival. Mr. Smith asked what was being done. to show that Canada had more to offer than cold weather, ducks and Moun- ties? tion of Newfoundland, have ex- pressed interest in taking over the two plants. BOUGHT FROM LERCH The shares were bought from the late German financier Jo ‘hannes Lerch. New interests would pay $50,000 to manage the plants, but it; would not give them any shares. The new agreements, if passed, will enable the government to re- cover the original $7,500,000 in- vestment. Once the plants have been taken over by new management, preferred shares will be created for CMIC of $2,500,000 and of $5,000,000 for North Star. New management will use its profits to buy these shares from the government. Then manage ment will have an opportunity to buy common stock which would give it complete control. “We will .continue to be sole owners of these shares for some time to come,” the premier said. Mr. Smallwood said the plants have spent $18,400,000 for New- foundland labor and the purnhase of goods in the last six or seven years. WHY NOT FORECLOSE? Opposition Leader Malcolm Hollett asked why the govern- ment paid $50,000 for the plants. “Why not foreclose?” Plants Bought For $50,000 Cost $750 Million To Build 8 last four years.
