Andrew Carnegie is getting old, more’s the pity, and as he is still U possessed of untold wealth, and also possessed of the notion that to die rich is to die disgraced, he is flinging away the millions in ten million blocks with great rapidity. liibrar- ies, colleges, the Scotch uuiversitiis, pensions for professors and teaciieis, a hero fund for the Statis and Can- ada, another hero fund for Germany, gr peace palace at The Hague, and ii fifteen million Institute in Washing- ton lightened his load somewhat but left him yet too heavily weighted with wealth and hence unprepared to die. So u few months' ago he gave ten millions for the promotion of peace and has now given anotlier ten mil- lions to the Carnegie Institute in Washington. This famous institution is devoted “to encourage in the broadest and niost liberal manner re- search and discovery, to show the application of knowledge to the im- provement of mankind and to pro- vide such buildings, laboratories, liooks nnd apparatus ns may be need- ed." And in pursuance of this pro- gram the Ciirneigie Institute has al- ready done certain things. lt has sent a bronze yacht, powerless to deflect the ni:°.i'incr’s needle, over the seven seas to chart them correctly. Carnegie has so far done nobly in the distribution. But we are yet somewhat concerned for the good man. Solomon the Wise has left it on re- cord that "there is/ that scatteretli and yet incrcaseth." Ten million gifts in such quick succession, doub- ling over the same ground like a pur- sued hare, would seem to indicate that there may be many millions yet to cause Mr. Carnegie uiiquict nights. ‘Let us hope that he will win out in the race he has set for himself, and that his days may be long enough to calmly iinburden him of the yet re- ,mainingi load, with dignity and iuithout haste. 0f lata Mr. Carnegie has seemed a little liilrricd. f .-\ Sl!\'tlL’I._»’\R ACClDEI\"I‘. Sometimes \\'hen on a moving train 'the brakes are set hard, one or more of the wheels will slide along the rails, in which case a flat place is worn upon one side of'the wheel. Thereafter the wheel will knock or thump on the rail at every revolu- tion, the shock being in proportion to the extent of the flat surface, the weight which the wheel is carrying and the speed of the train. During lthe recent cold spell a train left St. John going westward, having one such worn car wheel. It was noticed 'ns the train started that one wheel was thuini-ing, but the occurrence was not taken seriously. _ Now mark the result. Between St. John and McAdam Junction, Et dis- tance of about eighty miles, the dam- aged cur wheel broke sixty-three of the heavy steel rails with .which the track is laid! It is remarkable that the wheel itself, or the car axle was not broken, or the train thrown from the track, or that other trains did not come to grief on the dninaged track. No doubt prompt measures were taken to effect repairs. Other- wise the occurrence is sliggestivf- of how railway accidents may, :ind doubtless do occur from causes that are wholly unforeseen, some of which it would take more than huinan care and caution to prevent.
