BLAKE, Convener. © R SMALLWOOD, Secretary. ‘THE DAILY EXAMINER AUGUST 15, 1900 A TEST OF SINCERITY. Sin Witrram Lavaizs is in Pictou County, wearing his sunny smile. “His dearest wish,” he says, is “that the people of ail Canada shall be united.” The sincerity of the Right Honorable gentleman when he uttered this delightful sentiment would be demonstrated, now, if he were butto put the brakes upon the press supporting his Government. La Patrie, the Government orgar in Montreal, for which $20,000 was recently paid, declared a few daysago that— “We discover in the enemy’s camp formidable elements ot hatred against the French province of Quebec. Chiefs and organs are directed by the same fana~ ticism. Clarke Wallace, who is to-day the high priest in intolerance, is at the same time the right hand of Sir Charles Tupper.” But in Pictou County, among the Scotch Presbyterians of Nova Scotia, supporting Sir Charles Hibbert Tupper, Sir Wilfrid finds no evidence of this “ fanaticism,” aod he rests with confidence in the arms of his very dear friend Senator Carmichael, A few days ago, the Globe, blowing a blast for the other wing of the Govern ment party, said ; Sir Charles Tupper boldiy held th«(Con- stIvative) party to the resioration of sep- erate schools in Maritoba, and soughi to drive the Orange ):ader out of Parliament. Ube tect that.be policy of tbe Federal inervention in Manitobs could not pos: ~ibly be made effective counted for noth= ing with the Coneervative leader. He ieliberately prolonged ar-ligious conflict sut Of which no pussiole good could come \o the minority in Manitoba, and deliber- stely humiliated and crucified the Orange Conservative because be believed that by courting the favor ot a body of ecclesias— ‘ie@ In Quebec be could hold that prov. ince and rule Carada in defianceof the views ef his followers in Ontario.” Such writing ac this reems to be un- necessery in view cf Sir Wilfrid’s aseur- ance that.the Mavitoba School question ‘sia eettled’’; it is certainly not calculated to promote theee Christian feelings of love aud corcord ard union to promote which is “the dearest wish” of the Premier's heart. Certainly the Premier ought to administer a few words of gentle rebuke to The Globe as well ae to La Patrie. And what ought he not to say to his newspaper organ at Three Rivers, Quetec> which quite recently put forward this plea on bebalf of Sir Wilfrid and Mr. Tarte: “Canada, the largest portion of whose population is French-Canadians, is pre~ sided over bya French-Canadian Cath- olic. Leave thingsas they ere; do not, through rancour, envy or jealoury, wisn THE DAILY EXAMINER, CHARLUTTETON AUGUST 15, 1900 SS 8 Mente ee il tt MIR la i to replace this French-Canadian by an Englishman, an Orangeman. Have our compatriots of the oppositios 80 little of the spirit of petriotiem as ‘to imagine an Knglish tory more iv keeping at the head of affairs (han a Canadian liberal ? It ia not necessary to consider only if the government is liberal or if itis conservas tive, These qualifications should not count.” That ig to say —‘ ‘the French-Canadians are now master ofthe administration;— do not, upon any account, let any division among French-Canadians admit of the accession to power of men of other ne tionalities*—described sentent‘ously and forcibly as “Englishmen” and ‘“Orange- men.” Surely Sir Wilfrid’s sunny smile j must have been saddened when he read , these lines, pregnant as they are with he ' spirit of racial hatred, jealousy and dis- ‘union! Or has Sir Wilfrid merely been ‘ acting a part while livingas @ guest in Presbyterian Pictou County ? We shall see Whether or not the double- parreled disunion gun of the government will at once cease firing —that will be the test of the Premier’s sincerity. —_—— ~ ~ EPS ee i } DR, RYERSON’S§ TESTIMONY, Dr. Ryerson, who left Canada last winter as Canadian Red Cross Commis- sioner in South Africa, gave, upon his return, & few days ago, an extremely in- teresting interview to the Montreal Star. ‘lhe doctor is full of admiration for the good work done by Lady Roberts and other English ladies of wealth and station ia Sonth Africa, and contradicts both Bur- dett-Couits and Kipling as to the al- leged ineffiziency and neglect of the hospi- tal corps. He expresses great pride en account of the martial deeds of the Can- adian troops sand declares that Colonel Hughes did good service. Having been stationed atthe army headquarters, Dr. Ryerson saw a great deal, almost daily, of both Lords Roberts and Kitchener. There was potbing more atriking about the two generals, he said, than the contrast be- twecn them. Lord Roberts was smail, sharp, active, genial and approachable. Kitehener, on the ether hand, was a man of whom almost every other man was afraic—‘all, tacit vra, difficult to approash, matter of fact, but much more amuable that his appearance would indicate. In this respect, too, he belied his reputation. Roberts was distinctly the master of the caispaign, very determined, very kind to his men, especial:y to tbe sick, and the idol ot his army. a “If the esteemed EXAMINER were as ps- triotic a8 it is partisan it would rejoice with the Guardian iv the booming trade, the busy industry and rapid progres- of this great Dominio: ofours. * * * * Tue Examiner «lose appears sad and envious, and wouders why The Guardian should take the ‘‘ pains ” to publish the figures !
