ApsconDED.—Charles Cutter, ‘one of the contracters of the new police building, St. John, absconded on the 17th, after drawing $2,394 from the Chamberlain. He has also drawn sums from several others for whom he was working, amounting in all to $4,009. STANLEY.—-It is said that a disagreeable surprise awaits Mr. H. M. Stanley on his return home. A New York lady to whom he has been long engaged, and to whom he was to be married on his return from the present expedition, has wearied of waiting, and taken to herself a mate more likely to stay at home, A MEETING was held in Halifax on Mon- day afternoon relative to establishing a College of Science and Technology at Hali- fax. Several gentlemen addressed the meeting and a resolution was passed to ap- | point a committee to draw up a constitution ; and course of study for the said college to be established in Halifax, Another meet- ing will be held at an early day. Ix the Court af Appeal, in Montreal, judyment was given in the case of Queen's Sisnetin Company and the Quebee Gov- ernment, in which the question of validity of the Act passed levying a stamp-tax on all volicies issued by imsurance conpanies. Four out of the five Judges decided against the Government. The case, which was a test one, will be further appealed to the Privy Council. Tue English Church papers often call at- tention to the alarming ignorance of the secular papers, when the latter volunteer to discuss church topics; the following is one proof: A correspondent of the Standard says that *‘soon after the present Vicar of Tarporley took up his residence in that parish the papers circulated the rumor that the rev. gentleman and_ his curate actually| practised celibacy in the open streets! Cirry Councit.—A meeting of the City Council was held last evening. There was a full attendance of the members, <A large number of oity accounts were passed and ordered to be paid. The other busi- ness before the Board was not of much im- portance, the time of the Council having been taken up with an irregular debate on the rotten quality of the policemen’s cloth- ing. The meeting was adjourned till Tues- day. A special trai was at once put on for Georgetown, to carry mails and passengers to the “* Northern Light.” Mr. ScuurMan, one of our Gilchrist Schol- ars, has obtained a Seholarship in Logic and Moral Philosophy, in the University of Lon- don. The Scholarship is worth £50, sterling for three years ; but as Mr. Schurman is a month or two over the specified age, he cannot draw the money. Mr. Schurman reflects honor on the Province and on Prince of Wales College of which he is a brilliant graduate. Tre steamer ‘“‘ Princess of Wales” at- tempted to make a trip to Picton this morn- ing. She went out a little beyond the Blockhoyse. It is said that some floating ice was seen; and it was feared by the more imaginative on board that it might congeal before nightfall; so the helm wag put hard up. Tue Brittsh Navy.—Mr. W. H. Smith, M. P., has been entertained at a banquet at St. James’ Hall, in recognition of his ap- pointment as First Lord of the Admiralty and of his services to the Conservative cause. In acknowledging the toast of his health, he said the navy was in a better condition than it had been in for many years. Tue story of treachery at Kars by Turk- ish commanders is current in London. The statement is that two pashas having subor- dinate commands inside the beleagured city betrayed the garrison by letting the Russians into the works before the defend- ers became aware of the movement ; that the two pashas contrived to be taken prisoners; that they aftewards refused to be exchanged, in order to escape trial and punishment for their treachery. Tue Entertainment in the Convent De Notre Dame last evening, at the opening of the Christmas term, was well attended. It consisted of two serio-comic dramas and several piéces of vocal and instrumental music. The dramas were very well ren- dered and the appreciative audience were loud in their applause. The music, both vocal and instrumental, were of a high order, and were—particularly those accom- panied by the harp—well received. The English Parliament is summoned for the seventeenth of January.
