In cattle, the dairy breeds predomin- ate, chief of which are Holstein, Ayrshire, Jersey and Guernsey, while Shorthorns are the chief Beef and Dual-purpose type. The total number of live stock on the Island in 1934 is: Horses, 27,400; cattle, 96,800; Swine, 31,500; sheep 54,100. In 1925 the first general test for the elimination of bovine tubercu- losis was conducted; on an approxi- mate basis of 100,000 cattle tested, only .59 per cent. were found to be afiected. Further tests in 1929 reduced this figure to one fifth of one per cent-an enviable record. In 1892 the first cooperative- cheese factory was ‘established in New Perth. Dairying increased during the following years until today there are 32 factories in operation-ZZ cfeameries and 10 cheese factories-with a capital investment of over $275,000, engag- ing 110 managers, operators and assistants, whose salaries and wages exceed $75,000 annually. For the first nine months of 1934 approxi- mately 1,600,000 pounds of butter were manufactured, while cheese production for the same period has been about 500,000 pounds. The dairy industry in this Province provides a regular income to over seven thousand farmers and was the first stepping stone to our modern agricultural system, The Cooperative Egg and Poultry Association, first of its~ kind. in Canada, renders valuable aid in this department of our agricultural life. Estimated on available data for 1933, the production of eggs, includ. ing exports and home consumption amounted to approximately 500,000 dozen and dressed poultry in the vicinity of 650,000 pounds. The combined value amounted to some $700,000. Efforts are being continu- ally exercised to further develop the market for these products in Great Britain. The progressive policies adopted by the Cooperative Associations, combined with Federal and Provin- cial Government assistance, plus the ‘active zeal of individual farmers "must inevitably result inincreased production and ever expanding mar- kets for th'e agricultural products of Prince Edward Island. nnnxunuwnnnunntnuflflnflfl", MMMKNMHKMnnusqhihavqmnflllbdbonnnnnnmnu n - ~ nunpennnuxnnnrsuuxnblku oqnwrlllxllflblnsqhloqnmbcnuniba IqnnnsqDennisonlcnmxmnanqnxmnolnqnnnqmlqlanlb ‘Trunumnnmknknnnknnukwvlblknnnnnn nnkkknnnmvqunvcnn L.
