True, other breeds have developed or crossed with Island stock, the most notable being the Wisconsin- Alsskas which were mated with Prince Edward Island silver black females to iorirr the inundation stock of Fromm Bros. and Niemsn now Fromm Bros. Ltd. and Niemsn Bros, the former located at Thiensviile, Wisconsin, and the latter in north arn Michigan. These two firms have Henry Foniiud their businesses. counting their foxes by the than- sands or- pairs. Between them they will market this ysar about 40,000 pelts or about 50% of the American take-off. y As we wrote in these columns some time use the pups are removed neni the IINMUBE POM about the middle of September and sent to more northern parts of Wisconsin and Michigan and placed in heavily wooded large enclosures hundreds oi acres in extent, double wired so as to prevent escape. The Fromm Bros. pelts have been described to us by those who have seen them st the New York auctions, Sweden, Norway,» as being practically all alike, very large with very heavy leather, very silvery with a coarse but clear color. ed fur, but not possessing very much underfur. As a trimming iur they are unexcelled, their siae and the peculiar quality of the fur adapts itself admirably to that purpose. As neokpieces they are not so popular as our Island Sliver Fox. they havi- not got the silkiness and resiliency. the beautiful colorings or the iinisli and coverings to tips, brushes, etc., that a really good _ clmen irom this province has. By the way. before concluding our brief desscrtstion on the Froninrs we may mention s couple of things we heard about them recently. One was that they nev. breed- ing purposes s. female that does not produce a litter oi tour or more the first year. By this process oi elim- ination they have improve. the average of their ranches which stands st four to the pair or a little better over a period oi years. The other item we heard relates to feed. so great is the quantity oi iced necessary to appease the appetites of the foxes in even one unit of the Fromm Bros. ranch that many head oi horses have to be slaughtered daily. On one occasion there was a hold up from some cause and the feed was absolutely run out and re- course had m be made to severe. pedigreed bulls of great value that were on the farm adjoining. The cost per pound worked out some- thing like one dollar. With all the talk about oi! color pelts and bad season for foxes fur- ring up, which is true enough ioi without question there is a desperate lot oi trash and all kinds oi of! co!- ored stuii, yet we have seen more specimen pelts this year than any time in our experience in the pas. four years. One marvelous fox pelt. that we had to do with the other day was a pale silver from one oi the most prized . ‘s. He was a G fox, therefore born in i920. Clear as crystal with plenty right back into place, hesvy, blue black neck, large, beautifully form- ed. dark well covered brush and large white tip, total length from tip Christmas Week-end Specials of fur that when we rubbed it came oi nose to extreme tip of brush 62% inches. We predict that this lad will make them step at the London , auctions. What do you think oi milk as a means of producing good fur, is a question we ask day aitei-‘dsy to dif- ierent ranchers. Most oi the chaps -who have good pelts tell us that they fed quite a lot oi milk during this spring and summer but eased off in October, while here and there is an odd rancher that has no use for milk. but the most of them think they could not continua raising good " foxes without it. ! A few days ago a young man ar- = rived along with four pelts. He was l a school teacher and had purchased ; a pair oi foxes a. year ago. Good: selections were recommended to him i and the four pelts he had were out oi’ a litter of six. They were large. well fur-red, clear colored and the silver was beautiful. We were de- lighted to congratulate him and i0 tell him that he iiud tlic ability evid- ently to make a great success 0i fox farming. What amount of his suc- cess was due to the good qualities at the parent foxes or to his care and iced we cannot say, probably fifty- fifty. , One thing we have palticularly noticed in our contact with Bilver Fox farmers ‘is that in sections where there are one or more successful ranchers with good animals the tendency is for the other foxes ir that section to improve. One neigh- bor calls on the other. secs the QOOL . foxes and rapidly adapts himself to l perhaps buys some stock from him and improves his herd. The exhib- itions have also played their par‘. and last but not least the inspection» conducted by the Canadian Nations. Silver Foil Breeders’ Association. That other countries are not lag- ging behind in their sflorts to im- ties oi the Silver Foxes in their d1;- malns is evidenced from time YA time. The Quebec government IlLlL energies oi its departmuit of agri- culture to educate the Sliver Fox farmers there in methods oi’ ieeding, care and sanitation.
