Outlook For World Wheat Crop Reviewed GPIAWA. May 0 - (Q) - The world wheat production picture is discouraging. The Bureau of Statistics said today the outlook for the new world wheat crop, to be grown and harvested this year, ls "soma- what less promising" than lt was a year ago. It said the United States, with acreage in excess of last year's and generally favorable growing conditions, should equal and perhaps beat its 1M8 production of 1,388,000,000 bushels. But proqaects in Canada were not so favorable. 1n Western Canada, moisture de- ficiency is causing concern. It generally had been conceded that some increase in wheat acreage would take place. However, prairie moisture deficiencies may force some modification of seeding plans. There were dismal prospects of serious grasshopper infestations. However, the Bureau said, im- proved weather conditions could "do much to offset the effects of both factors.“ In Europe, a smaller seeded duction in the outturn oi’ wheat ‘from the 1M8 level. In the South- ern Hemisphere. seeding is pro- greasing in Australia and Argentina under generally favorable condit- ions and there have been no indic- ations to date of any appfeclgblg changes in acrease fom last year. Ir. (Associated Press News Anal!!!) Reports that Greek Couununisu are seeking United Nations mediat- ion in their war with Athens carry a strong suggestion that Russia rr-ally is making a general change in tactics. The Berlin blockade negotiations lcrenlcd an air of expectancy re- Ignrdiilg Russian policy, but with widespread western recognition that one swallow does not make e summer. In Prague the minister of Justice of the Greek rebel government an- nounced that he had written Her- bert Evait, president of the United Nations Assembly, suggesting medi- ation.
