The lower trend was influen- ced by an expansion of local sell- ing and hedging sales. and also by favorable crop reports and fur- ther evidence of good rains over the prairie grain belt. tg Commercial buying came out on 1 the recessions but prices gener- ally closed lower. Rye came in for some aggres- sive buying by American houses. but'was overshadowed by local selling which sent. price. down- ward. Declines in United States market: also influenced the trend here. In the export business reported. Belgium purchased 170,000 bush- els of Canadian wheat The R public of Ireland took 250.000 bushels, and Colombia 50.011). July 12 --(CP) -- Newcastle disease raging uncheck- ed through poultry (locks in Brit- ish Columbia - sky-rocketing potential losses into the millions - today found poultry raisers and Government officials alike still seeking a cure for the scourge. with more than 350,000 chickens and turkeys already dead. a Pro- vincial Agriculture Department of- ficial said losses to the Province in potential income from the -poultry industry were fest nearing the s3,-- 000.000 mark. Close to 15 per cent of the Prov- ince's chicken population has been "wiped out with heaviest losses in the Fraser Valley and on Van- couver Island. "Estimates place Federal Govern- ment aid to stricken poultry pro- ducers in the Province at 3600.000. The money is paid as compensat- ion to those whose flocks have been slaughtered to prevent the disease from spreading. Proposals to check the disease - a virus infection similar to in- fluenza. in humus-have ranged from mass vaccination to poultry import restrictions on British Columbia's borders, a. distinct pos- sibllity. The Poultry Industries council here has recommended vaccination of flocks near infected areas. It termed the present policy of slaugh ing infected birds "inef- fectlve. The recommendation also asked consideration for a new British virus vaccine, reported to give one year's immunization with spread- ing an impossibility. A spokesman said poultry import bans might help eliminate tram- fer of the disease from Province to Province and from the United States to Canada Tightening of controls on feed sacks and egg cartons may also be undertaken. A Dr. w. E. Moynihan. of the Fed- eral Agriculture Department told a meeting of the B. 0. Turkey As- sociation that spread of the dis- ease by humans is a possibility. He said that most virus dfreases-New- castle among them-are airbozne. Farmlrices OTTAWA. Yanks Face Tough Campaign In South Korea By J. M. Robertl. Jr. AP News Analyst American boys. too lightly armed and poorly reinforced. are fighting to turn a strange river in Korea into a new Marne. It was the British-French ann- ics along the Marne which, after disastrous retreat from the Bei- gianborder. broke the impetus of the Kaiser's first drive in 1914. It was against this same line in 1916 that the Imperial German armies bashed out the last of their brains. The armies along the Kum can't compare with those that fought along the Marne. But the Marne stood before Paris and the Allied holding operation made possible the long come” ' through which they eventually won the war. The Kum stands before Taejon, American headquarters and south Korea's temporary capital. and before Pusan, only decent port for handling the American reinforce- ments for which the thinly-spread defenders are so urgently caning. As Wednesday night fell on mass- ing Communist forces north of the river, few looked at the American line with any great hope. "You don't fight two tank- equipped divisions with .30-calibre treating American officecr put it. adding, "this is the most useless damned war in all my life." (He was referring, ndoubtedly. to methods and mesrs, not motives.) There was beginning to be talk that United states forces would be thrown out of Korea. and specu- lation as to what might then hap- pen. Criticism of behind-the-front activity was mounting in the Unit- ed states. There was not enough action. said the critics. Too much complacency. High Government officials met and agreed to issue gloomy warn- ings of a long fight, for which they seemed to have ample grounds. But they gave people nothing to rally around. Perhaps preparations were going forward Word was leaking out that if the Americans could just keep holding on in Korea until September, things would begin to show. Reports from London that Rus- sia. had not slammed the door on proposals for peaceful intervent- ion served merely to add to the confusion. Allied diplomats know that with her North Korean pup- pet. army advancing. Russia will make no deal except out-and-out bargaining for a high price -a price higher than the West can pay. Town Threatened By Oil Tanks Fire FAIRVTEW. Okla. July 12 - (AP)4even gasoline and kerosene storage tanks in the centre of Fairview caught fire today after a chain explosion. Three warehouses storing thousands of barrels cf oil also were burning. Twelve persons were taken to hospital with in- jurim as this town of 2.400 per- sons in Northwest Oklahoma was threatened.
