THE GREAT STEEL STRIKE.
One of the greatest and most peoiiliir
labor strikes that have yet occurred any.
where is the great steel strike which has
its centre at Pittsburg. The men now out,
Awvsar
or ordered out within the next few days
number a round hundred thousand, and
their going out will compel 410,000 more
tobe id1e,so that the labor and employ-
ment of half a million men are involved.
,And yet it is not c question of wages, or
of hours of labor that is at the bottom of
this tremendous disturbance in the steel
industry.
As is well known some months ago the
great billion dollar steel trust was formed
bringing together in one corporation a
:rg-3 number of the great iron and steel
industries of the Uuitel States. This
great combination of capitalists took over
the plants and contracts of the .iron and
steel industries which became parties to
the trust. The thousands of employees
also became employees of the trust, and
they in their turn formed their various
labor organisations into an Anialgamated
Association of labor under the presidency
of T. J. Shaifer.
But a number of the great millsbrought
into the Trust had before employed non-
union men. The Amalgamated Associa-
tion has sought to extend its membership
to include these former non-union men in
its ranks or exclude them from
working. This is the poiatof divergence-
the “unionising” of certain mills in which
