The red cross ot' St. Andrew on the Union J ck is the cross which runs from ciiiflner to corner, and it is said that St. Andrew was crucified on a cross of this type. The cross which runs from side to side represents the cross ot St. George of English tradi- tion who is remembered in popular conception as mounted on a horse and in combat with a dragon. CHICAGO, May 17.-The .unfavor- able crop report from Kansas. lili- nols, Indiana and Ohio indicating a. total cut of one hundred million bus- hels trom the Government figures or it month ago jumped the price ot wheat 4c. yesterday. Big export clearances and a decided falling oil’ in the visible supplies helped to bring about this very large advance. There is very little surplus wheat left in Canada. probably only about ten million bus- hels and about titty millions in the United States. Ot' this surplus the greater part has already been boiiglit and. is being held for European ship- ment. Since July last upwards oi’ three hundred and ilfty millions of bushels have been shipped and the visible supply is much smaller than at this time last year. Corn and oats advanced slightly in sympathy with the wheat. WINNIPEG, May 17.-influenced by the rainfall for the past t'cw days in the Canadian West the price started to fall to-day but by noon the reports from the wheat belts in the United States changed the situation and -thc market closed with wheat ll/Qc. high- er than yesterday. Oats continued to be in good demand and the market advanced another 1/|c. The oiicriiigs ot' grain were not equal to the rc- quircments. TORONTO, May 17.-»Tlic reports oi' crop damage and the enquiry for ex- port udvanced the price of wheat 2c. a bushel to-day., There’ is no change in the market for outs and corn. ,MON’l‘REAL, May 17.--There was very little doing in the grain market in Montreal to-day. Oats were in good demand but prices showed no change. There is no change in the condition oi’ the market for baled hay, No. 2 is bringing $10.00 per ton ex-track. I-logs: The price ot' hogs to-day ad- vanced anotlicr 251:. per hundred lbs., while dressed hogs advanced from 50 to 750. The market is strong and a further advance is predicted. Cattle: At the Montreal Stock Yards a strong feeling has devclopcd in the cattle market and prices advanced an- other 25c. per 100 lbs. There is a very small supply coming forward while the demand is increasing. The de- mand from packers and butchers can- not be met, and some of the packers wcrc forced to wire to Toronto for car loads to illl their orders. This helped out the Toronto market some- what and helped to steady the prices there as the receipts to-day at Toronto were vcry heavy while the trade was somewhat slow, Eggs: The receipts oi' eggs to-day were 2.938 cases as compared with 985 cases for t_he corresponding day a year ago. In Montreal the prices were fairly well maiiitaiiied, being to the trade 22c. in round lots, while stumped selected stock brought 2-ic. in Toronto, however, the prices arc declining. The increased volume is so gr(-at that wholesalers are now buy- ing at from 18 to 10c_ and are likely to go still lower. ' The potato market has declined. On- tario dealers are uttering 351;. per bag of 90 lbs., while Montreal is offering 45c. for the best quality oi‘ Green Mountains. Clieese: The most important fea- York Point Ferry G. B.
