Sin,--The Pioneer man while indulg- ng in unbounded jubilation over Mr Cannon's victory in the recent bievele race, goes out of bie way to imsinuate that | the Charlottetown wheelmen will be slow | todo their part. He says: Mr. Cannon. before the race, tendered his money, and itis hoped the other participants will pay The management we understand, wi!! do their part any time.” lhe facts of the case are as follows: A the Charlottetown wheel- men waited on the Secretary of the asso- ciation, and arranged for a bicycle race, the conditions being that there should be Six entries, that the wheelmen should the association an } equal sum; and that the entries should be inon Saturday, 22nd. The comunittee | then solicited and easily obtained the $15 from the wheelmen, also $5 from citizens not wheelmen, and then arranged with the Secretary of the association that there should be three prizes: lst, $20 cup; 2nd, $10; 3rd, $5 silver spoon. No entrance fee was ever hintedat or thought of by Charlottetown wheelmen till seen in the Pioneer. Mr. Cannon‘s entry was not made till Monday, but was accepted all (the same. Mr. Cannon, after the race. (not before) tendered his money to the =~ that matter had been all arranged for. In view of these facts, then, it is unfair, that a Summerside paper should insinuate that the Chariottetown wheelmen had , or would be, anyway small in their connection with the recent race. Peraon- ally, [ was very much pleased with the rut. T believe it will lend an impetus o wheeling on the Island. that nothing eo e else would have done. As far, too, as | can learn, I think the Charlottetown wheelmen generally are very well satisfied and pleased,at least as far as they can be so consistently with their love of seeing their own town mest successful. They simpty met a better man and bore the fate that all others have to when such things happen. Nor do they begrudge, in the slightest degree, Mr. Cannon having “some- thing to show for his hard fought battle.” I was pleased to see a Canadian made machine-—a Brantford—take the race; also another Canadian, Comet, take second piace W. This fact shows for it-elfin the entire satisfaction that the lights of this Island have given to mari- ners. Wenow expect that the dredging of this harbor, which has been so re- peatedly asked for, will soon be begun. When this is done, Crapaud will be one best harbors of the Province. This will largely increase the shipping trade as Crapaud is backed up by a fine country. MARINER. — -—-_-. = A COMPLAINT. Sir,—The people of the country are curious to know why our local govern- ment have restricted the appointment of liquor vendors to Charlottetown. Why dis crimate in favor of the capital of this Is- land? If our Government, as temperance men, consider that the appointment of liq- uor vendors for Charlottetown confers a hoon upon its inhabitants, why not extend the appointments of vendors tothe coun- try ? Will some of our local representa tives kindly inform us why this privilege of a vendorship in certain suitable locali- ties is denied the country people, while the people of Charlottetown can have three to dispense br@@hdy when necessary.
