Frank Stockton Confesses That He Want- ed to Be a Maritime Robin Hocd, Frank R. Steckton, in his story, ‘‘The Buccaneers of Our Coast,’’ in St. Nicholas, says: When I was a boy, I strongly desired to be a pirate, and the reason for this was the abso) ute independence of that sort of life. Restrictions of all sorts had become oner- ous to me, and in my reading of the ad- ventures of the boid sea rovers of the main I bad unconsciously selected those por- tions of a pirate’s life which were attract- ive to me, and had totally disregarded all the rest In fact, I had a great desire to become what might be called a marine Robin Hood. 1 would take from the rich and give to the poor. 1 would run my long, low. black craft by the side of the mer- hantman, and when | had loaded my ves- | with the rich stuffs and golden ingots shich composed her.cargo I would sail way to some poor Viliage rake its nbabitants prosperous and happy for the and syaekd ti “i ¥5 of their lives by a judicious Cistripu n of my booty I would always be as free as a sea bird My men would be devoted to me, and my word would be their law. I would decide for myself whether this or that procecding would be proper. generous and worthy of my unlimited power, and when tired ol! sniling I! would retire to my island—the position of which, in a beautiful, sem)- tropic ocean, would be known only to my- self and to my crew—and there | would pass bappy days in the company of my books, my works of art and al! the various treasures I had taken from the mercenary vessels which I had overhauled Such was my notion of a pirate’s life. 1 would kill nobody, for the very sight of my black flag would be sufficient to put an end to all thought of fesistance on the part of my victims, who would no more think of fighting me than a fat bishop would have thought of lifting his hand against Robin Hood and his merry men and I truly believe that | expected my con- science to have a great deal more to do in the way of approval of my actions than it bad found necessary in the course of my ordinary schoolboy life. I mention these early impressions be- cause 1 have a notion that a great many people—not enly young people—have an idea of piracy not altogether different frem that of my boyhood. They know that pirates are wicked men, and that, in fact, they are maritime murderers, but their bold and adventurous method of life, their bravery, daring and the exciting character of their expeditions, give them something of the same charm and interest which belong to the robber knights of the middle ages. The one mounts his mailed steed and clanks his long sword against his iron stirrup, riding forth into ‘the world with a feeling that he can do any- thing that pleases him if he finds himself strong enough. The other springs into his rakish craft, spreads his sails to the wind and dashes over the sparkling main with a feeling that he can do anything he pleases provided he be strony enough. “A BAD SYMPTOM Every One Who Has It is Glad When It Disappears. ST. MARGARET’S BAY, N. 8.—“ My whole system was run down and I felt tired all over my body. I was sleepless at night and my appetite was poor. I did not obtain reliet until I was advised to take Hood's Sarsaparilla. That tired feeling is now all gone and I have a good appetite and feel well and strong.” CHARLES HUBLEY. Yon couldn't get me to attempta practical joke if there was a fortune in it But the remedy was something terrible,” and the old gentleman who did the talk- ing ground his teeth. ‘You know that Il gloat over my victims till | now wornier that some of them didn’t do me bodily harm. “My reformation was wrought in this way. After being married for 28 eight years and getting together a handsome fortune, my wife and I decided on a trip | through the east and south. When we | were seated in the crowded car on which we took our leave, Blobbs, whom I had joked incessantly, entered with a merry party of friends, congratulated us at the top of their lungs, wished us all kinds of good Juck and showered us with flowers. My wife was indignant to tears and my chief grief was that 1 was not armed. “But this send off was only a begin- | ning. At the first stopping place there | were half a dozen telegrams awaiting us | and others reached us along the route. | Our ears were constantly assailed by ex- | pressions like these: ‘No foo] like an old | foci,’ ‘Well, it’s not May and December,’ | ‘Who says merrisge is a failure?’ and a , lot of other chaff, varied by an occasional | love ditty. At our first hotel we were greeted with effusion, informed that our coming bad been announced and shown to the bridal chamber. We had a floral centerpiece, bearing the cards of Blobbs and his fellow conspirators, and we were gazed upon as though museum attrac- tions. It was simply unendurable for either of us. I changed our route and cut off our tormenters, but the trip was not a success. When Blobbs and I meet, there is only one of us that speaks, and he grins.’’—Detroit Free Press The English Imitation. He made his appearance suddenly, com- ing forward with a swinging gait. He was a tall, spare man, witha sharp nose and thin lips. He wore no mustache, but sported a goatee on his chin, and his face was seamed with painted lines. He was dressed in trousers that did not quite reach his ankles, a rough coat, a wide western hat, and a long linen duster, unbuttoned. He whittled a piece of stick unceasingly. Some one said something to him. He replied thus: “Waal, I guess! kin bet your life on thet, sah! should smile!” This was greeted with a roar of laugh- ter. He continued: *Naow, in my country, in the land av the stars an stripes, sah, things is mighty different, sah. Yes, sah; yes, suh; yes, sir!
