Sir,— Permit me througi the columns of your valuable journs! to say a few words to the public concerning an item that ap- peared in the Patriot of the ‘20th inst., headed “Lakeville Bridge” and signed “Farmer.” He states that the bridge built in 1878 cost $1,800, and always entailed consider- able expense each yearto keep it in repair. Permit me to inform “Farmer” that the actual cost of the erection of that bridge was $1,100 and it never incurred one dol - lar of expense for twenty years with the exception of planki 0g the driveway. The men who constructed that bridge are now dead. Buteverybody who had the plea- sure of their acquainiance, will give them the credit of being good mechanics who knew well how to put lumber together. He also claims that there has been asav~ ing of $1,098 effected in the construction of this bridge. The saving of that $1,000 corresponds favorably with the other savings that are effected by the gang of “ incapables” that at present handle the affairs of Prince Ed- ward Island. He eays that thie bridge stands a credit to the Government or supervisor. Well, if that is @ structure that anyone can claim credit for, credit must be easily obtained. Vuring the months of Aprii, May, June, an¢ up to the 12:h of July, the condition of that bridge was disgraceful to any civilized community. Aod the public were generous*enough to remain silent through respect for the poor men, who were engaged in constru( ting this em - blem of grit economy, unii! Farmer” rushes into the columns of The Patriot, and tls us that the Government or tue supervisor—he ecarcely koows which which—deserves great ‘ credit” for this noble stracture! Mr. Kditor, there are ema!l wooden structures throughout this district, which were formerly know as water-raye. But are now shown in the public accounts as “Large Bridges” that are in such a disgraceful state that on approach ing one of then you have to brace your feet, clinch your teezh, ‘ook out for your hat; and woe betide you, if you are so uofortunate as to be afflicted with any- thing like a sore back. The advice tothe Government cencerning stee] bridges, is simply ridiculous, as ifevery bridge ir not a steal, Thecoatraciors, no doubt have earned their money, and perhaps more money than they have received. But to state, that there has been a saving of $1000 effected in the construction of this an “ia simply rot.’’ One suggestion Editor and I am done. I propose a 8 first claes artist, be employed by the Government, sent up to Lakeville and let him draw a full piciure of this bridge, have 100 feet or more of the railing colored brown and marked, built under Conservative rule, and the balance colored white, froma a soaking of dirty lime, and by no means let him forget the cross ties where oneend of the stickis spruce and the other end fir. Bave it properly fram- ac, and sent to the }Halifax exhibition—as we are not to have one of our own, anJ possibly, fora consideration, in the shape of a small amount of money, the Super- visor, might be induced to take it in charge and he could explain to the people of Nova Scotia the economy that ie practised in the Public Works Department of P.E.
