Day of closing school for holidays. Day of opening school after holidays. Flags may also be displayed in any district on the day of certain local events such as public picnicf, school examination school entertainments, lectures, etc. .On the death of any pupil, school otheials or rate-payers the flag _ on the district schoolhouse should be 'placed at half mast to remain so until after the burial. On‘ the death of any very distinguished person in the Empire the flags might be placed at halt mast, In all cases and on all days mentioned above the flags are to be displayed during school' hours o`nly.` Should any day be so stormy that the flags would be in danger of being torn or destroyed they should not be displayed. On those of the above days on which the Vthe schools are open, ap ro riate exercise D D might be held. A short address by the teacher and a few songs, essays, etc.by the pupils, nllisuited to the day, would make an appropriate program of exercises, Strathcona Day, the second 'Tuesday in June, will be a regular Flag-day of the year. I thought it proper to associate with the Flag-day the name of the gentleman who kindly donated the Bags. Arbor Day should be celebrated for the most part of the school yard (I wish I could say school lawn) `ln describing the grounds, planting trees, flowers, shrubs, etc. and otherwise beauti- fying the schooll surroundings. Labor Day could be spent in a manner similar to to Arbor Day. St. Pa.trick’s, St. George's, St. Andrews and August 15th, and the national festivals of the Irish, English, ‘Scotch, and French, respectively, the four great nationalities represented in this province. As in some of the most import- ant days, such as Dominion Day, the schools will he closed it would be well for the teachers to draw the attention of the _ pupils to the significance of those days. The day following would be the most opportune time and then an hour might be spent in suitable exercises. On the first day of each season would be an appro- priate time for the giving ofa lesson on the season just begun or the writing of an essay on the season just ended or the one being entered upon. On the day of the Annual School Meetinglt might be appropriate to explain to the pupils howapublic meeting should be con' gducted and thefobject forwhich school meeting is held in each year. I hope to be able to furnish each school in the Inspectorate with- a list of days on which flags are to be displayed as well as some exercises appropriate to each day. In the meantime, I would ask the teachers to clip this programme from the news- paper and preserve it for reference until I can forward them something of a` perman- ent nature to replace it, any suggestions will be thankfully received by _ the undersigned.
