There is, as .\lr. Gardiner aptly emphas- ized, a basic inconsistency" in deploring the ter- rible condition of ziqricirltnre in one breath, and then in the ncxt going on to deplore the depart- ure of so many‘ y-otiiig people from lllfi farms to the cities. "If we are going to keep our boys on the ,. farms the snid) we shall have to preach a dif~ pl i‘ ferent ltind of philosophy from what is being i preached today in this House and elsewhere. We must preach the [lllllOSODllY that there is nothing better, or more worthwhile, than pro- ducing food and clothing, the two tihings that are necessary to all of us. If farming, produc- ing the things we need the most, is not consid- ered the best of all the professions or trades, or whatever you like to call it, there is something wrong with our way of thinking.” It woultl be idle and untruthful to deny that there is plenty of room for improvement in l rural living. Far too many rural homes lack the i conveniences which are comparatively common- place in urban dwellings. Nevertheless, in many parts of rural Canada, these things are being introduced, and the numerous benefits accruing from cheap electricity for instance, are becom- ing availablt. In recent years. also, a great deal more is becoming known on the place of agriculture in the economic system. The effect of national policies and world conditions on price levels is much more clearly tmdersitood, and it may be taken for granted- that so far as these factors may be controlled policies which formerly meant slow starvation of agriculture will be avoided. Wartime demand has, of course, raised prices of almost all farm products, so that, as Mr. Gardiner stated, total farm income averaged $1,600.oo0,oo0 annually during the last three years, bringing an average return to each farm 0f $2,000. Vilflfius factors, like hired help, sunshine. ers are at least work. Privy Council, a is in Ottawa. wit tion deals with t It would be the other A reasonabl would reduce this measurably, but in general farm income is about two and a half times what it was in i032, a depression ycar which still colors thinking about farm income. Apart from the question of farm prices, for loo long farm- ing has been sligrtmtizcrl by the failures of bad farmers. . Much more is being done to provide pro- per education for rural life. Better facilities are being crczttcd, and more useful subjects be- ing taught. The value of education for farmers has ncvcr been so widely recognized as it is t0- diav. Rclntcrl to this. tbcrc has never been so much scivntifn" sludv of farming and its prob- lcms. Soil (‘l*ll.§('f'\'iIfl(lll, technical methods, bct- le-r crops, improvcrl stock breeds, and the like, are much more clearly understood as basic prin- ciples of fanning succcss. . Thus, there are scvcrnl reasons why pcggi. mistic tall; about farming is no longer in line with facts. Tiruc. people havg to work hard_ e5. pecially at rcrtnin scasons of the year, but that is. or should be, understood by any one intend- lfil! to fake up this ancient fray of life. There are compensations which urban life cannot Dossiblv provide. even with shorter hours and a relatively secure source of inconie. lf our farm- crs and would-he fnrtncrs would concentrate on the improvemciils which exist and are being made in rural life. then it might become gener- ally recognized that farming is~intlced "the best of all professions or lrarlcs."
