However, mg ygu progressed it was found gm, due to extensive building ac- tivities in the town. the program of finuiicial consolidation had w' b, chmged in many respects. To keep abreast of building ac-I t-ivities this necessitated large water and sewage extensions, cl department which came under thel control of the municipality during; the year New streets and extensive' s to existing pavement came in for large expenditure. and it isi hoped that I suitable program on! a smaller scale will be carried outl "ch year to protect the invest- ment made in our streets. This past year again the Town of Summerside co-operated with I the Provincial Government in its A rural electrification program. when approximately 30 miles of new lines were built in rural areas. I believe this will be of great benefit to rural districts near summerside and will reflect to the benefit of the town. The welfare of Sumrnerside, I (grading centre, depends on a happy and prosperous surrounding rural area. Due to the over-crowding in our public schools, additional class- rooms were provided. This was done by converting the auditorium into six new classrooms which has relieved the congested situation at least for the present, but ivhich leaves the community vigiliout an auditorium. It is expected that this problem will be faced early in the new year and that a civic cultural centre will be erected which will be a credit to our citizens. At a recent meeting of my coun- cil, the purchase of a valuable block of land was approved which in years to come. I believe should prove a very serviceable asset to this community, and consideration is already being given to a section of this area as the site of the pro- posed community centre. I am pleased to note from sti- tistics the emplorsmenf in our town has improved as compared with the previous yea. and wifh I; noted general improvement in Name Guest Speaker For Week Of Prayer -The Rev. Mt. Pleasant -A late afternoon fire yester- day destroyed the 8-room farm home of Mr. Reginald MacLaod of Mt. Pleasant. Due to disrupted communications. as a result of the storm, details of the fire. were not easily accessible but it is under- stood the blaze originated in the attic from a burning flue around 4:30 p.m. When first noticed Itlames were shooting through the rooftop, fanned by high winds and the fire was beyond control. S'side Council Approves Brennan Property Purchase -A special meeting of the Sum- merside Town Council last evening gave approval to the proposed purchase of the- Brennan Property by the Town of Sumrnerside. This property. bounded on three sides by Central, Beaver and Summer Streets, is located near the Summersida High School, Queen Elizabeth Park and the Prince County Hospital. No indication of the price to be paid was made either l.n the reso- lution or .ii a brief refering to the iriarter by Mayor Wedge. who was the only one to comment on the pzcposed purchase. Mayor Wedge said he thought the action of the council in regard to this property will meet with the approval of all the citizens He said this was about the only remaining vacant. lot of land of this sze which is centrally lo- cawd. and while there was no plans in view for the use of this property at the present time, it could serve the town either as a park or a site for public buildings. In this respect he noted that the construction of an aud.itoriu.m will have to be considered after the new year and that this might be a suitable location. Being so handy the public school and park. he said it was only right that the munici- pality should cwn this section of property. The resolution moved by Coun- cillor Clarence Steele and seconded by Councillor Donald Lidstone. read as follows: "Resolved that the arrangements made between the Town of Bummer-side and the Brennan interests regarding the purchase of the Brennan property on Central Street known as 'Pa.rk- dale' be confirmed. and that the Mayor and Town Clerk be auth- orized td have the necessary docu- ments completed." Iriforimation on the exact size of the property which also contains a large residence was not available last evening. but it was thought to contain between two and three acres. Before the introduction of the resolution. a letter from Mr. W. R. Brennan. was read by the Town Clerk, Mr. John E. Cameron. ac- cepting the offer of the Town of summerside to purchase this prop- erty. At the beginning of the meeting the council approved payment of the unpaid bills for the various departments up to the present bytorion Church. All services will commence at seven thirty o'clock.
