VIOLEITE KIMIALL DUNN I The morning following Ellen's departure from the earthly scene, Mark woke to contusion. Then he i looked through the open doorway into the emptiness that was Ellen's room. and remembered. But oddly I enough. it was not his wite's going that came back to him. It was the memory of the horridly sweet fumes from hundreds of blossom - the curious mingling oi disso- lution and festivity - that had risen to the upstairs sitting room where he and young Valerie had sat the day before in delerence to custom. From below had come a faint rustling. and the soft scrape of extra chairs. He could picture them - set in place by long-faced men in sober black, earning their bread by professional solemnity. He visualized the women who had abandoned their bridge tables. and the men who had left directors' meetings to listen to a man in Church of England white, who . Knew nothing at all of Ellen. read her iiineral service. He had looked across at the delicate oval that was Valerie's lace and been filled with sudden wrat that Ellenls young daugh- ter should he forced to look on at all this. her eyes wide with un- asikcd questions, while habit sur- rounded Ellen's exit with perfurne and shaded lights. The thing was a relic of barbarism. a hangover from heathen rites. How much more decent. he thought. a pro- gress in respectable privacy to the place where Ellen's earthly gar- ment was to be reduced to ash. with a prayer or two for El-lenis peace in her new estate. whatever it might be. He was indignant. too. that at- ier submitting to the conventions thrust upon him. he must be shut up here in the sitting room as if he were a criminal, while people thronged his houseyat will. And indignant that anyi.hing as joyous as a rose should be forced into un- willing contact with what couid be at worst only a colossal blund- er. ”I suppose we could send them to hospitals. "Valerie had said surl- denly. Mark started. The child had surprised him more than once by picking his thoughts out of the air and handing them back to him. He didn't pretend to misunder- stand her. "I guess it would be better to do some good with them. I don't believe I ever saw so many -- even at the wedding." Valt-ric's eyes then filled and brimmed. But her tears seemed more those of circumstances than ' WM .' 3o3011t7m ""214 IIAOIANT CIIAM DDDOIANI ably sell Wide Acres now,” she told him. Mark started. "Sell Wide Acres?" The idea was purely fantastic. ' ”rhat's what she said." "I'd much sooner think of soil- ing Dorothy." Valerie smiled a little. "She said you wouldn't want an enormous house all alone." ”But I'm not alone while there's you. Besides, I built it when there was nobody else here." Vaierie's eyes brimmed again. It disconcerted him. For all her cap- tivity in Elients personality. she had never had the habit ot tears. He sat still. not speaking. His own freedom was so new lie hardly more than sensed the necessity for caution with Valerie. "Dorothy said she and Paul could make room for me. She said no e nobody could expect you to-to-" ”Maybe Dorothy has forgotten that I adopted you legally a long time ago." "I don't think so. But she said nobody could expect you to - to keep me - now -- " "Let's get us some more fiir." said Mark. He leaned forward, tak- ing her with him. and laid a log on the flames. He had entirely for- gotten for the moment what was going on below. Had even forgot- ten Ellen, lying almost warmly beautiful under shaded lights in flesh-colored satin. "My darling child. you're not a piece of fur- niture I had sent home on ap- proval. You see, the law gave you to me. Dorothy can't take you away - unless. of course. you want to go." To be continued Achievement ol Manhllnld Guides The 1st Marshtield Guide Com- pany has made rapid progress since they started just over I year ago and are even more tuil oi enthusiasm. The lollowing guides gave an excellent demonstration of Semaphore including sending and receiving messages: Jane Wood. Betty Foster. Barbara -Tenklnl. Iris Frlzzel. Irene Foster. Millicent Munn. Lona Scott and Marguerite Munn. Attractively planned Na- ture books were presented for the test and the girls all passed suc- cessfully. The meeting taken by the Field Secretary was at the shore with Lenders. Mrs. John Munn and Mrs. Hector Jenkins. Most. of the teat work was carried out before supper and after a feed of sandwiches and cookies with the most delicious coffee made over the camp fire by Mrs. Munn. A review of future work was plan- ned and a talk on the coming camp was given by the F. 3. These guides are chiefly senior girls who made a very determined oifort with sincerity to accomplish all the work required in the Second Class test by this month and they have every reason to be very proud of receiving the Second Class badge. The work was tackled systemat- ically hy the Leaders and test fin- ished step by step until completed. Examiners for the various sections have been Miss I. Arsenault. Div. Comm.. Miss G. I-tart. int.
