late John Sandileld Macdonald, in close
alliance with the Ottawa Government led
by the late Sir John A. Macdonald. The
l second general election, in March, 1871,
placed the Government in a minority md
the leadership of Hon. E lward Blake. Hg
held the position tor but 5.- short time,
however, and in October, 1872, .Hom
Oliver Mowat, now Sir Oliver Mo-wat, bt-
came Premier, which post he held for
Hon. A. S. Hardy then succeeded him- and
held the leadership till October, 1899,when
Hon. George W. Ross, ‘the present
Premier, succeeded him.
Thus the Liberal party has held power-`
in Ontario continuously for over thirty
years, duiinvg almost twenty-four years of
which time it was under the leadership of
Sir Oliver Mowat. It is siguiilcant that
during much the larger portion of thq
time since the union of the Provinces the
same Province which for an unexampled
period remained resolutely Liberal in its
Provihcial affairs. sent a majority ot Con-
servative members to represent it in the
House of Commons. The elections cf
1872, 1874 and 1896 were exceptions to this
rulr, but otherwise and at present the
Province has had a Conservative major-
it-y at Ottawa. This condition at contrast
no doult arose from the stronglcontrol of
two very able public men, Sir John Mac-
donald and Sir Oliver Mowat. They
moved in different Belds, and while

shown in the irrestiy' reduced Libirgl
majorities given in the general election
