and old look out for him with pleasur-
able delight and anticipation! How
they flock to the door with eager ques-
tions of "Any for me'."‘ or "ls there one
from So-andso?" almost before the
beaming messenger, staggering be
neath his weighted bag, has time to
disgorge his treasures-
And what a dire blow it would be
for a moderate household of the post-
man never came at all on Christmas
Day! Just try to imagine it; if you
can! Not a letter, not a calendar, not
a Christmas present, not a Christmas
card. lt wouldn’t seem like Christmas
at all!
So says the pampered generation of
today. But it was notlong since that
only the dwellers in cities or towns
or- good-sized villages could feel toler-
ably certain of getting their Christmas
mail on the very day itself; and an
accident to the coach might very con-
ceivably result in a disappointment to
expectant householders. even in those
bu.sy centres of population. Such ~ be
ing the case, how must have fared the
little hamllets far from the beaten
track, hidden away along deep lanes
where a heavy fall of snow might
choke for many a day or many a weary
week. '
Other days, other ways; the major-
ity of people nowadays stand a fair
chance of getting their Christmas let-
ters somewhere about the festive sea-
son; and when you feel inclined to
grumble because everyone of your
half-penny post Christmas cards didn’t
come up to time, then. I say, be thank-
ful that you don't live yesterday; or
today, for that matter, in certain spots
whose advantages and disadvantages
we do not know of.
Progress in the facilities of com-
munication, notwithstanding, there are
still. within the compass of these Brit-
ish Lsles of ours. a number of places
where the postman at the best of
times is a rare and irregular visitor,
and his visits are more 'rare and less
regular still when the gales of whiter
are blowing.
The men who keep their mighty
watch over our coastwiso lights- they
for example. unless their monthly “re-
lief" falls due .somewhere about Christ-
mas tide, cannot hope to receive sens-
onable greetings except such as comc
well in advance or well behind the oc-
casion to which they refer. For the
only communication between the land
and a solitary rock like the renowned
Eddystone is maintained by a tug ba-
longing to the Brethren of Trinity
House. This boat pays a monthly
visit to the lighthouse for the purpose
of taking off one of the keepers, and
leaving lu his place one whose period
of absence is over. The returning
man brings with him lcttor and papers
from shore, together with necessary
provisions and-lf it be Christmas- a
store of soasonablo luxuries.
At ordinary timcs, when tho weath-
er ia not exceptionally rough, the
approach to the lighthouse is not the
easiest business in the worl'd. Men.
bags. and boxes can seldom be landed
`on the platform- "get off,” as lt
is technically termed- at the base of
the lighthouse tower. Generally, in
any but the very smoothest state of
the sea, a. rope-sling has to be utilis-
ed, something after the style of the
usual life-saving apparatus.
And when the weather ls really
rough- when the breakers roaring
round the terrible Eddystone which
has sent so many stout vessels and
brave sailors to their doom, dash their
spray up as high as the lofty lanterns
itself-when the solid structure of the
lighthouse tower seems to quiver be-
neath the booming shocks of the an-
gry sea -then the tug cannot get
near the rock at all. and the keepers
must make up their minds to walt foi-
their monthly message from the shore
flgnaliasd by disasters to shipping and
coasts strewn with wreckage- it
frequently befalls that the lighthouse
keeper’s Christmas - is a very lonely
one indeed. _
Somewhat similar conditions prevail
on board the lightships. those unple-
turesque but useful craft which mark
the position of dangerous shoals and
sand anks in the track of shipping. In
summer, their visitors are compara-
tively frequent ,and small excursion
boats or friendly pilots often get near
enough to throw s bundle of papers
aboard or to deliver a letter from
friends ashore. ln the winter time.
however, the lightahlp is as isolated
aa the llkhthousef with the added
spice of danger, for it has happened
more than once that alight vessel has
foundered at her moorings during s
heavy gale, or has been' run down by
a moving vessel during a fog. By
the crew of the llghtship, therefore.
Christmas has to be kept up with the
store of ssasonable feeling possessed
by its inmates , rather than through
such outward aids to good cheer as are
provided hy the Christmas letter-bag.
As wpll as these sollary Yulctide

land is not frequent. But those peo-
ple-not natives of the place-parson,
doctor, schoolmaster, or what not -
may expect in vain, i_f the weather be
wild the_welcome coming of the Chris-
tmas letter-bag. The Islend of Et.
Kilda has been known to be unvlsited
between the beginning of winter and
the end of March; a record which puts
into the background the story of a
man who, crossing a Yorkshire moor
in February met with such lavish hos-
pitality that he felt it needed some ex-
planation. "Well, ye see," said the
good wife of the farm, "yo're our First
Foot!"
To quote Kipllng's well-known words,
_"All unseen.
Romance brought up the nine-fifteen!"
and probably most people never pause
to consider the romantic suggestions
which lurk hidden behind the bleak
official phraselogy of the notices ad-
orning the notice-boards of one post
office building.
Long months before the majority of
people had ever given a passing thou-
ght to next Christmas, indeed. when
last Christmas is not the remotest of
memories, there arc a fcw people who
are already choosing their Yuletidc
gifts, writing- not without tears, be
cortalnl- their Christmas letters to
loved oncs far away. it seems a far
cry enough oven to civilized Canadian
or Australian scttlcnicnte, where tlic
mail is delivered rcgularly by postmen
not so unlike our own. But think of
those Christmas letter-bags which
have been months on their journey-
so long that the -hand which penned
tho greeting, thc eye which should
have read it, may be still, and closed
before the missivo reaches its |les'..ina-

dog-tcam whose approach will break
the dread monotony of a more than
half-year winter. The sleigh, with its
team of fierce “huskies" or malamutes,
as the sleigh-dogs of the West are call-
cd, carries of course, much besides
mere letters. Upon its .safe arrival the
posts may be depending for the very
necessarics of life. and so important
is its mission, that there are on record
several cases when the “mushers"-
generally members of the Mounted
Police-have lost their lives in attemp-
ting to reach their goal.
Few, “postmen" could he more pic-
turesque than those Santa Claus-like
messengers to thc frozen North; yct,
if thc scheme matures which is now
under consideration of utilising the
services oi’ Lapland reindeer, the
"huskics" will have to take second
place. That would be a Christmas
mail, indeed, spreading horns, Jingling
bells, muffled driver. frost congealing
the breath of man and beast. But per-
haps it is nicer on a Cliriatmas card or
in Hans Anderson's fairy story than
it would be in real life.
Very different is the story of the
Christmas letter which- so the Post
Office gently reminds the forgetful in
early autumn-“must be posted before
such-an-such a date for deilvcry about
Christmas” in some remote swamp of
Burms, West Africa. or British Guiana.
That letter will have forded crocodile
haunted lagoous, crossed i'ever-breed-
ing swamps. and pushed through
trackless tropical forests, tucked away
in the turban or lion-cloth of the na-
tive runner who maintains final com-
munication bctwccn Britain and her
farthest tropical outposts. God Spccd
