P." By Guardian’s Special Wire) MONTREAL, March 21-The power that swept them to the Allan Cup championship last year has not deserted Moncton’s high-flying Hawks. Maritime champions again, they showed too much strength for McGill University's Redmen here tonight as they beat the Quebec champions l-l in the first game of the interprovincial play-downs, and skated off the ice with a two-goal lead they will carry into the final game of the series Friday night. A capacity crowd of 13,000 fans kept up a continuous roar of excitement as the speeding Hawks ran up a three- goal lead in two periods, generally outplaying the Redmen. The excitement rose to a crescendo in the final five min- utes as the Redmen scored their only goal and finished with a burst of blinding speed that had the Hawks puffing badly as the bell ended the game. Wildly Chcered Hundreds d Mantirners shrleked themselv house as the Hawks sent thl oollegians sprawling with rough body checks and sent light- ning thrusts through the red de- fence fa‘ goal after goal. Thous- ands of McGill students and old graduates were on their feet in the lut few hectic minutes as tho Quebec champions ran all over the Moncton defence and blasted a terrific barrage at Jimmy Foster. McGill fang were dLssatlsiied with Referees Johnn Duggiti oi Ottawa and Duke Mc urry of Tor- nnto. They showered rubbers, coins, newspapers and hats on the ice. The game was held up l0 minutes in the final period as icemen clear- sd the playing surface. Blundered Pzrdly Hawks showed a world of speed. ruggedness, smooth play and scoring punch to earn their win. The McGill team blund- rred about almost helplessly at times. Their passing plays were not clicking and their shooting was in- different. They only showed their real calibre in those last two min- iitol. Bert Connolly, a former Montreal boy, rang up the first goal for Hawks with 12 minutes to play in the first period.
