.77ze ‘Prince County ' Capital m Summerside, the second largest to\vn in Prince Edward Is? land and the capital of Prince County, has grown rapidly since its incorporation in 1875,,and enjoys the distinction of being the headquarters of the Canadian National Silver Fox Breeders’ As‘ sociation. From a few scattered houses and one or two stores in 1850 it has grown to its present area with a population of about four thousand. It is governed by a Mayor and six Councillors, the first Mayor being elected in 1389. The town is now considered one of the most progressive in the Maritime Provinces. In its early days Summerside was the hub of the ship-build- ing trade. That has now given place to the fox industry, which was commenced by the late Charles‘ Dalton and Robert T_ Oulton in 1894, at Alberton. At the present time fox ranches abound al over Prince County, with Summerside as the marketing head- quarters. The town has a modern and splendidly equipped municipal electric plant and an efficient water and sewerage system. The operation of these ‘utilities has been successful financially as well as from the standpoint of public service. Among the leading industries are wood-working, agricultural machinery, cold storage, Creamery, flour and grist mill, grain cleaning and canning establishments. Of considerable importance is the fishing industry. Large factories are situated along the water front and each season canned and live lobsters are shipped, chiefly to the Boston market. Large quantities of smelts are also exported. ‘ Summcrside harbour is one of the finest on the Atlantic sea-v boar , capable of accommodating ships up to a draft of twenty—threa_ feet. The Marine Wharf is especially designed to facilitate the loading and unloading of steamers. Perhaps no town east of Montreal does as large a mercantile trade for its size as Summerside. Some of the firms are noted throughout Canada and parts of the United States as well. An enormous trade in farm produce and other special lines is done by’, these firms. Summerside has an aggressive Board of Trade which is at- filiated with the Associated Boards of Trade of Prince Edward Island,‘ the Maritime Board of Trade and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. - Its educational facilities include an excellent Public High School, as well as an Academy for the education of the Catholic children of the community. , It has a well equipped hospital serving the needs of the Country as well as of Summersdie. . The residential sections of the town are beautifully laid out. 'Iherc is good hotel accommodation, and ample facilities for fish- ing, golfing and other sports. _WELCOME TO THEIR.
