by Mickey Place Everyone knows the old saying, "There's no- thing new under the sun." We were reminded of this conversational chestnut last week when watching - the soccer. game against ' Mount A. at MacAdam. field. There are a lot of old Panther fans who look back with nostalgia at the past great days of Panther football. (Actually most weren't so great but they seem better as time dulls the loses and magnifies "the wins). It'is easy to forget that it isn't so long ago that old S.D.U. rooters were looking askance at the "Foreign" game of Canadian Football ‘that was supplanting the old favourite rugby matches which had been very' successful here. We remember hearing one of our friendsremark that all that. was needed to makeva new game a I spectatOr "favourite was a bunch of short skirted screeching screaming flip @219. dc/m cheering the team on. We think this is true of the present attitude for Soccer now. Last Wednesday,» when Alan Stewart opened the scoring with a breakaway in the first half, his bench and the players cheered. The hardful of spectators gave mild and polite applause. When, a short time later Frank StrOmeier set up Scott Neil for the only 61:11a- score of the match, the applause was even milder. It was as though the crt‘md. had already seen it happen before. (Mldl to our disappointment, Scott Neil, from Edinburgh, does not playin kilts.) The game ended 2—0 for our "Good guys". ' Gary Polenz, who comes to us from Montreal by way of Victoria scored the first marker. Our own Andy Cameron, who is back with us after success abroad, scored the second. We must offer congrats to Peter Mac— Donald, a recent convert to goalkeeper, for succes— sfully guarding our net for both contests. We have no won two games by 2-0 and, most apprcpriately, have a 2-—O record. Saturday afternoon Dal— housie plays here at 2:00 and Saint Mary's will be the opposition on Sunday at the same time. Not being too familiar with soccer we must marvel at the stamina of the players who go through two long ' halves with? no substitut - ions. We were particularly pleased by the adroit play of Andy Cameron who controls the ball with "his feet mu‘ch the same ‘ as a good stickhandler does in hockey. With recent Panther teams not faring too well in most sports we have often wondered what the campus reaction would be if we, soem season, emerged with a winner. Perhaps this is the year and perhaps soccer is the game. let‘s hope the team gets the support it, deserves. The Lady Panthers invaded Nova Scotia over the weekend and managed a split in games with Saint Mary's and Acadia. It was a different story the next afternoon in Half- ville as‘Patti Bradley and Libby Baldwin scored while Heather. MacDougall was playing brilliantly in goal and we won a ‘ well earned shut out 2-0. This brings the season's record to 2—2—1. The girls take on Mt. Allison at 4:00 p. m. on Friday, this is the team they must beat out if they are to make the playoffs. Come on Girls! We sneaked a peek at v a practise of the Men's Basketball in the gym one afternoon this week, and we can understand why Dave Nutbrcwn is sporting a satisfied smile these days. At the same time we under- stand his reluctance to claim too much for his team as they are very young for this man's league but. . . . . if we can hold the players together for a couple of THE SUN, Thursday, October 1, 1981, page 11 up I JOCKTALK years...look out! We note by the morning paper that Dalhousie Soccer, visiting us on Saturday, is rated as the #1 team in Canada while we, for the first time are nationally ranked, squeeking in as #9.
